It's so nice to see Pope Francis has lightened up since his earlier days in the Army.

Yep, it's called Sola Scriptura. No mumbo-jumbo man-made beliefs here. Sola Scriptura, latin for the Scriptures Only.

Yes, a concept which ironically is found nowhere in the Bible (the Bible states that Scripture IS AUTHORITATIVE not IS THE ONLY AUTHORITY) and was a mumbo-jumbo man-made concept created by Martin Luther in the 15th century.

Think.

Go ahead and quote the letter to Timothy so I can debunk your interpretation for the third time today.

I look at the Pope as another head of state. No more, no less. But I understand why other people see him differently.

RE: Pope Francis in the U.S.
1 Then the Pharisees and some of the scribes came together to Him, having come from Jerusalem. 2 Now when they saw some of His disciples eat bread with defiled, that is, with unwashed hands, they found fault. 3 For the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they wash their hands in a special way, holding the tradition of the elders. 4 When they come from the marketplace, they do not eat unless they wash. And there are many other things which they have received and hold, like the washing of cups, pitchers, copper vessels, and couches. 5 Then the Pharisees and scribes asked Him, "Why do Your disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat bread with unwashed hands?" 6 He answered and said to them, "Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written: 'This people honors Me with their lips, But their heart is far from Me. 7 And in vain they worship Me, Teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.' 8 "For laying aside the commandment of God, you hold the tradition of men--the washing of pitchers and cups, and many other such things you do." 9 He said to them, "All too well you reject the commandment of God, that you may keep your tradition. Mark 7:1-9

This is a wonderful Scripture quote in reference to Christ speaking to the end of the Old Jewish Covenant and its subsequent laws and traditions. It reminds me quite a bit of what St. Paul has to say in his letters to the Romans and Galatians that likewise states that the laws and traditions of the Old Covenant no longer saves or avails but only faith working through love. Luckily for us, Christ also gave us New Covenant. A beautiful and everlasting one.

One could easily argue that beneficial change in the world indeed lies at the hands of the US Congress along with the President.

We're still far and away the most influential and powerful country in the world. Not much global change happens without our support.

Probably not. It is in the city's best interest to provide support for something like this.

I oppose tax dollars being used for this purpose simply on principle of separation of Church and State. Damn...The Church pays no taxes and now the citizens(many of which really could care less about the Pope) are pretty much being robbed to pay for his visit. The Vatican has plenty of cash. They should foot the bill.

Just FYI, the Vatican's annual budget is less than that of the city of Birmingham, Alabama.

If you're going to complain about this, then complain about how tax money is frequently used to protect non-governmental personnel. Like ALL THE TIME.

So...the Vatican does not need a large budget. Well...No damn wonder. The tab gets picked up by others. It for damn sure has nothing to do with the ability to pay. 07-coffee3

Probably worth the inconvenience. I like this Pope and wish him well in his transformation of his faith. I just wish the Church would pick up his tab when he leaves the table.

Those guys are highly skilled and trained. Don't let the uniforms fool you.

I know it's a tradition but isn't it time that the tradition is changed a little. They look like ballerinas with tutus. And those stupid bedroom slippers. Wow.

Not all of the Swiss Guard is dressed that way. Many are on the sidelines dressed much like our Secret Service agents are dressed.

I know how to make DC transportation infinitely better. Cut the size of the federal bureaucracy in half. Not the guys in the field actually doing things, but get rid of half the bureaucrats sitting on their asses in DC. Wouldn't do much for property values in the area, but would do wonders for the country.
