Quote:What has Carey done? Two more appearances in MAC Championship game, the highest margin of victory in a MAC Championship, and a 3-0 record vs the B1G.
Yes, and being paid little. BUT, I'm sure he's happy. After all, it's all part of his plan to take over Illinois or Indiana.
In all seriousness, he did take over an obviously dominating NIU squad. Losing the MACC game to miss out on a 2nd BCS Bowl wasn't the best... and last year NIU wasn't as good as their record indicated thru much of the season in how they performed in their rebuilding year -- but at end they took out @WMU, and blew the snot out of BGSU. The pounding by Marshall to them in a bowl game didn't help much, but that was past hiring days... plus, not a shocker since Marshall got their injured guys back for the game + folks knew NIU wasn't as good as their 11-2 record indicated, in their rebuilding year. BUT, that is good for Carey. He (and NIU) knows how to win regardless.
This is Carey's year to be measured. If he gets double-digit wins, he's leaving. You can bet my virginity on that one!

Doeren only beat one P5 team at NIU. Carey's beaten 3, including Iowa, who Doeren didn't beat.

Thank him for the recruits he brought in and thank him for leaving when he did. I doubt NIU is where they're at now if Kill doesn't leave for greener pastures and Doeren replaces him.

So, an unbeaten regular season is under-performing and a MAC Championship is mediocre? Geez, making the Orange Bowl really turned some people into idiots when it comes to expectations.

i think he performed/had the results right within the expectations of him. a MACC in first 2 years. two 11 win seasons. a few draft picks. solid recruiting.
i agree, Orange Bowl definitely vaulted peoples hopes and dreams into the sky

Having Jordan Lynch and going to the Poinsetta Bowl and losing to Utah St, is kind of a disappointment...

Bowling Green was terrible last year(as was most of the MAC)...
We got destroyed in the Boca Raton Bowl....destroyed..
So far Carey is 0-3 in bowl games....
Again not saying he is terrible, but let's not go calling him the next Urban Meyer, Butch Jones, etc...

Nobody, said that. You're making comparisons that don't even make sense. You constantly bag the guy and ask what has he done.
Was he put in a good situation, absolutely. Did he **** the bed, no. He's actually added value to this program even without Lynch.
Look at the two deep of last year and this year, a lot of Carey recruits that are good players. Look at the games he's won. Do the bowls and the first MAC title game suck, absolutely. But going undefeated is basically impossible. Doesn't happen often. Winning is tough.
As far as the conference sucking you also have to remember NIU is supposed to be at their level. Let's say you are a sales person and you outsell everyone and get promoted are you going to turn it down and say you're just average but your competition sucks? Hell no, so don't sit here and tell us his record and beating MAC games are meaningless.
I don't like berating people, but you constantly say idiotic things.

They still won the conference. To say it's not an accomplishment is completely disregarding all the years when NIU didn't even make the conference title game.

No one on this board has ever said that Carey will become one of those guys. You're pulling this out of thin air to justify you're being unimpressed with Carey as a coach.

If you were expecting anything less than another BCS game in 2013, then you were expecting something that was very, very unlikely.
Getting to the Orange Bowl or a BCS game relies on so much going right that is out of NIU's hands. What happened in 2012 was more lightning in a bottle than anything else.

It definitely helped in 2012 that bowl-ineligible Penn State upset Wisconsin who later beat Nebraska in the B1G championship.
A game vs Ohio State is in NIU's hands. If beating the OSU is outside the realm of possibility, then why even discuss going to a BCS bowl, where the Huskies would have to face another top-notch BCS team.
If the Huskies win their other eleven games, it will be the OSU game that determines if they go BCS.

NIU could lose to OSU but win the other 12 games and make it to the Access Bowl without much fuss. Though we would need the MWC, AAC and CUSA champs to have lost 2 games to make it happen.

I remain convinced that the final thing that put NIU over the top that was Nebraska getting completely slaughtered by a 7-5 Wisconsin team in the Big Ten title game.
