If it can, it's a shame that it's never hosted USMNT, USWNT, or an international friendly or something to draw a crowd. I was at the Read Madrid v Man U match at Michigan Stadium last summer and it was awesome, and it would be even more awesome if Cincinnati would do the same.

I think that has to do with the field turf.

For some reason I find men's soccer dreadfully boring, but I really enjoyed watching the women's world cup. I think it's because the women seem to really play with more passion and aggression. Also, they seem to flop a whole lot less than the men.

Not sure what happened to that idea? I have become more interested in soccer for World Cup and the Olympics in recent years and would probably go watch MLS games if we had a team, no way am I interested in "low A ball" soccer though

Got to start somewhere. i believe the sounders and timbers both started as lower division teams and both are viewed as being the model for MLS. That said, i'm more intrigued as to how the Minnesota franchise will perform as they are as close to an apples to apples comparison for Cincy (ergo: Midwestern, small - medium market, pro sports town).

If this is some triple A or double A soccer team then they don't need Nippert. They can use Gettler and pay UC rent to do so.

Only an MLS team would need a stadium with 40k seats....

MLS teams don't even build stadiums with 40,000 seats. They typically stay in the 20-30k range.

BTW, this is official.

Well, I guess if anything UC will get some rent money out of this deal and maybe a piece of the concession sales. Could see UC football and the soccer club doing some cross promotions. I guess it is also possible from a bigger picture it could get some people down to campus who normally might not otherwise (who in turn might come down for a football game).

Still curious if a soccer field will actually fit and assuming UC will get some money out of the deal. Plus getting new fans to Nippert may peak some interest in coming back for football. Never hurts to get a little extra cash in the coffers.

I would appreciate it if UC football wouldn't be associated with a minor league soccer team.....it's just bad association for a football program trying to gain relevency and prove it's 'big time' worth. Just my two cents.

You nailed it. They need to give Red Cards for bad acting.

It won't...with all things taken into account it'll be smaller than most high school fields, and make the turf look crappy on TV with all of the soccer lines they'll paint on it like they did with the Womens Lax team pre-JASC

Just doing some minor digging...

Quote:Reportedly, the club is also waiting to completely work out the details of a stadium deal before formally proclaiming its birth and entrance into USL. It has been circulated that FC Cincinnati plans to use Nippert Stadium on the campus of the University of Cincinnati for the first year of competition. A source has indicated that the plan includes the removal of the first few rows of seats to accommodate a field large enough to be suitable for soccer.

I guess it is best that the soccer team is renting from us (as opposed to the other way around as Villanova and the University of Miami were proposing to do not so long ago).

That doesn't make sense. Why would we tear up rows of seats for a temporary tenant. It would be like making permanent modifications to your house because in-laws are staying for a couple weeks.

I agree...but maybe they're not trying to be temporary tenants? I still don't understand why they wouldn't use Gettler and make modifications to increase that capacity; there is no way in hell they'll bring enough people to a game to make Nippert even remotely feasible, plus it [Gettler] is already, you know, A SOCCER FIELD.

Only way this would make sense in this city is if the Lindners (rumored ownership group) were planning on a jump up to the MLS soon, look no further than the Cyclones to see how Cincinnati rallies around a minor league team in a sub-level sport.

It's not like anyone sits in the first few rows; those are easily the worst seats and the last to fill. In fact, we've traditionally had banners over them in order to make it look better on tv (I guess).

But I agree with your sentiments in that I don't want construction happening on a newly renovated stadium if it's just for a soccer team.

More like the first 6 or so rows. Ideally the lowest row of seats, along the sidelines, should be 6 or 7' above the playing field. A taller brick wall is fine.

If the goal is truly to get an MLS team, then they are pretty delusional imo. Cincinnati is about a decade behind about a dozen deserving cities with huge soccer cultures already who are vying for an MLS team. Just off the top of my head, Charlotte, Raleigh, St. Louis, Minneapolis, El Paso, San Antonio, Indy, Detroit with Atlanta getting a team in the next couple of years. As the MLS model is now there is probably only 4-5 future expansion spots left. For Cincinnati to get a top tier professional team, US soccer would need to implement a Promotion/Relegation system which the MLS would never be up for.

The Brown family did look into a soccer franchise years back. I wonder if this motivates them to act before they get more competition for their sports dollar?

Paul Brown can accommodate soccer. I'm sure there's something in the contract with Hamilton County which will require the taxpayer to make any modifications for this.

This is accurate. I'm a season ticket holder with the Portland Timbers (soccer). We have a turf field due to drainage issues (a creek runs under the stadium). The US Men's National Team will not play on turf, which is why Portland hasn't hosted a friendly.
