I think the first year TCU really dominated a conference was 2000, and they were already in the top 10 that year. TCU was a good football program playing at a high level, and the wins followed. That's different than the hope we seem to have that piling up wins against the dregs of D1 football will turn us into a better football program.

This doesn't relate to recruiting at all, if a mod wants to split this off.

Just out of curiosity, does anybody have a list of TCU's signature wins prior to being invited into the Big 12OrSo?

I remember the USC one, long ago, and I remember a win against BYU, maybe that counts. What were the others?

Oklahoma in 2005.

Wisconsin in the Rose Bowl probably counts as well.

I went to Wiki.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TCU_Horned_Frogs_football

Starting with the Francione Era, signature wins seem to be:

USC 1998 Sun Bowl
Iowa State 2005 Texas Bowl
Northern Illinois, 2006 Poinsettia Bowl
U of Houston, 2007 Texas Bow
Boise state, 2008 Poinsettia Bowl
Wisconsin, 2011 Rose Bowl
Louisiana Tech, 2011 Poinsettia Bowl

Like I said, I remember a 52-51 win over BYU in the regular season.

some of them may not count in our minds as sig-wins, and some others in the regular season might count, but this is what was chosen to be emphasized on Wiki.

In 2012, they entered the Big12. I was just looking for the wins that helped them get that invite, not ones afterward, so I ended it there.

feel free to add or subtract from the list.

RE: 2016 Football Recruiting
tcu signature bowl wins.....98 usc sun bowl.....05 boise st Houston bowl.....11 Wisconsin rose bowl....ole miss peach bowl.....the fact that they are in the rose is 4x's the power of just beating Wisconsin......regular season....98 air force ranked #23, Vanderbilt(SEC)....2000 Northwestern(big ten).....01 Louisville ranked #17....02 Northwestern....03 Vanderbilt(sec), Arizona(PAC10)....04 Northwestern, Louiseville ranked #12.....05 Oklahoma ranked #5, BYU(very strong that year if i'm not mistaken)....06 Texas Tech ranked #24...07 Stanford(on the road)

I stopped at 07.....I mean literally every year TCU is either beating a ranked team or they are beating a team from a top tier conference....that level of consistency is what is landing them better recruits, not just beating usc that one year and being mediocre for the next five...they beat usc and while the next year there wasn't a "notable" win they barely lost to #15 Arizona 31-35, played northwestern to a 17-7 loss, lost to fresno st 26-19 in over time(this when fresno st was giving every top ten team they played hell...there were exceedingly good), and rounded out their year by playing in the mobile bowl beating a pretty good east Carolina team. so even though they didn't have a "notable" win in 99 it was a year that they still could brag on. after that year nearly every year they have what we could considered a "notable" win. not to mention their records stayed in the 10+ range.....

ok did more research.....09 Clemson (on the road), BYU #16(on the road), Utah #16, virgina(ACC)....10 Oregon st #24, Baylor(big 12), Utah #6....11 boise st #5

again EVERY year wins against power conf teams or ranked opponents and the last two years before their addition to the big 12 they beat two ACC teams, two #16 teams, a big 12 team and two top ten teams.....lol....THAT'S why they got invited. they are a pillar of stability and sustained success in college football. they play anyone and play everyone hard. they are a great addition to any football conference.

This is the key. You have to do it year in and year out. There is no such thing as a one-off signature win. It becomes a signature when you back it up.

If anyone here doesn't believe the perception of Rice football isn't changing nationally, your mistaken. The process doesn't happen overnight, I don't care what anyone says about a lack of major upsets.

Outside of Rice supporters and CUSA fans, nobody has noticed nationally....and that's reality. Do you really think anyone in NY or CA or Ohio or Alabama cares or notices that Rice beat up on a bunch of irrelevant teams (in the national football landscape) ranked outside the Top 75? Or that we've been invited to 4 consecutive bowls? Sorry, but you're the one mistaken.

Lets keep this in the proper context. This is a recruiting thread and I'm certain that high school coaches within Texas perceive Rice football much more favorably than they did four years ago, and therefore are much more likely to encourage a player to attend Rice.

Nationally, people do percieve Rice football more favorably because they see us in bowl games on national television and they realize that has never been the case before. No, we aren't beating UCLA or Ohio State in these games, but we're in them and we're winning them nonetheless. No, we aren't getting any major upsets, but we're having winning seasons and have won a conference championship. No, we aren't TCU or Baylor, but we're not supposed to be yet.

Don't think people don't notice the improvement and don't notice the fact that we are building an endzone facility. Who ever thought that would happen? No one.

Quit being so harsh and discrediting the successes. We all want to be in the top 25 and playing P5 schools in bowl games, but you can't put the carriage before the horse.

Walt, you are entitled to your opinion, but please do not try to speak for everyone in he United States of America that is not a Rice fan. I have had numerous non-Rice friends, family, and co-workers comment about Rice's football success/improvement over the past 3 years. And I agree that HS coaches in Texas are much more likely to be aware of this than the generic college football fans (mostly LSU and Tulane fans) that I know.

Where exactly do you live? I live in Chicago, and regularly visit both NY and California...and I can tell you that, nationally, college football fans have not noticed. Fans outside of Texas and CUSA locations have no idea that Rice has put together a string of 7+ win season or four consecutive bowl appearances. No one is discrediting the improvement in the football program, but the improvement is from being a long-standing laughing stock and cellar-dweller to one that can now consistently beat programs in the bottom quartile of the FBS division...but one that has yet to show an ability to compete with, let alone beat, teams ranked anywhere near the Top 50. Until we do the latter, people outside of Texas are simply not going to notice.

Walt what do you think of our coaching staff's salary level ? Well I'll just say it's so modest that we had to go balls out to keep our DC from moving to Tulsa.......TULSA! We aint talking USC here. They were offering $150k more than we are paying.

I think Bailiff is doing a helluva job just holding this staff together.

This where we need that revenue increase. If we were bringing in a few million more a year, this wouldn't be a problem. But we aren't, so it is.

I have noticed a pattern on Parliament where we criticize schools for moving to higher-paying conferences, and then complain that those schools have bigger budgets.
