That $10 million figure is not an estimate, by the way. It was exactly $10m (give or take $10k) and it is a great facility. I got to spend an hour or so walking through it last November and it's something that any P5 program would be proud of.

Some time back, I suggested UAB build an indoor stadium and got ripped for it. I still just don't see any wisdom in building a 1900s era stadium in the 2016 to 2025 era. If you are adding to what you already have (like at UA and AU) that is understandable, but to build new from the ground as though the last 50 years of stadium development don't exist, is not smart. Build like you BELIEVE IN YOUR FUTURE PROGRAM.
I also believe that if the Bartow Arena can't be economically enlarged, it may go the way of the Hill Center Building and be replaced as well by a more suitably sized building by the end of the Haase Era.

the problem with an indoor on campus stadium is they cant be expanded, so you start with a stadium that's too large and depresses season ticket sales or you build one that is the right size today but you outgrow in ten years.

Is that limitation true of all indoor stadiums? Have any been designed to provide for expansion? Besides, I'm not at all positive that whatever UAB builds will be expanded in less than a half century. Either way, I hope UAB takes advantage of the latest in stadium designs whenever it builds. There are definitely many templates to provide examples to follow.

Barton arena is perfect for UAB. If we start selling out for seasons at a time, then we can worry about that. The atmosphere in a near capacity bartow is absolutely electric, and there isn't a bad seat in the house. This is most definitely no an issue for us now, or in the near future.

I would still like to see handrails in the upper sections, though...

Sure. There are a couple of things in bartow I'd like to see improved. But, bartow can literally get a face lift and still be perfect for UAB.

I am hoping that UAB will one day soon be worrying about how to accommodate 13,000 to 15,000 fans for its games without going to the BJCC. Farfetched? perhaps, but there are many potential college BB fans in the metro area, and UAB may just become their team.

One thing that would have been nice for generating revenue at Bartow would be box seats that you can view the court from (imagine the Green and Gold Room above the court).

Imagine a Bartow Arena with skyboxes for the wealthier boosters, box / club seating and room for 50% more fans. Do such arenas exist to serve as a template?

Boxes would take away from general admission, but add substantially to revenue. I would want that money going to athletics, though, if the arena was ever upgraded. Concessions are also a big concern b/c they suck right now.

Concessions (both a Legion Field and Bartow) probably can't be improved as long as the servers are inexperienced and working as free volunteers in a fund raising effort for some organization. Just being there is enough for their thinking. Making the customers happy is not a priority because many of them won't be back to do it again, and unless they offend someone important, they won't be fired.
I have not heard any complaints about the only professional food service at Legion Field- the PAPA JOHN"S PIZZA concession left over from when the company sponsored the bowl game..
