That's the pump house.
There are (four, I believe) pumps that are keeping the water table low, so that the field, which is (either 25' or 33', I can't remember) below grade, doesn't flood, even in dry weather.
It is not going anywhere.

Does is work like a well, where once the water table rises to a particular level, the pumps come on and remove the water to another place? Where is the water pumped to? Could it work as a sprinkling system?

If I recall correctly, without the pumps there the bowl would be full of water regardless, and those pumps keep water from being inside the stadium regardless of time of day.

There's a similar (albeit much more powerful) setup in the basement of Sewall Hall.

The entire city of New Orleans relies on such a system.

The live cam is back up and running. It looks like we've put up some black sheeting over the slope to prevent erosion from further rainstorms. Hopefully this is the last time that end zone is ever tarped.

IIRC, their is a sump float switch.
There are/were four pumps.
I would venture that the water is sent to Harris Gully, but I don't actually know for sure.
A sprinkling system? Some kind of cistern?
Aside from the additional capital and maintenance costs, probably.

Sump pump 10 is the lowest place on campus that I've ever visited.
It's a floor and a half below Sewall Hall "first" floor (lowest level).
It never occurred to me that there might be more of them in other locations around the building, but I suppose there is a reason that it was numbered "10".

I clicked on to this thread for the first time in a while, and my eye was drawn to (what appeared to be) sump-related free verse from Grungy. I have to say I was a little disappointed.

Sheepsfoot roller on the site today. Tough job in what has to be near-saturated conditions.

Looks quite different today. Been wondering if they are leaving the old concrete footings up to integrate them into the new building somehow?

Someones playing football. A football is periodically appearing above the Owl Club ad. It does have an odd trajectory. Not sure what they are practicing.

It seems unconventional (wisdom) that they are trucking dirt in when for the first few days of construction they were trucking dirt out.

In the mean time they were renting the dirt out at a profit.

Maybe it's historic "Brady Pink" clay.
