Awesome. Glad to see an executive level business leader publicly coming forward with this thought. Goodrich is the former CEO of BE&K construction and sits on the boards of Energen, Synovus, Altec, and Boy Scouts of America board.

That is his father. Michael Goodrich II is a lawyer at Red Mountain Law, founder of a software app firm and a damn fine fellow.

The cream always rises to the top, when given the opportunity. UAB needs unfettered opportunity. Clearly Mike and his ideas represent the cream of the crop.

RE: BBJ Guest column
It's a very good piece. It gets right to the point about the core problem with UAB as a whole. The Board of Trustees have handicapped the university and, by doing so, effectively limited the growth of what is a major economic driver for the city and state as a whole.
Like him, what I want to hear is the argument from the pro-Board of Trustees people. How does UAB benefit from being a part of this system?

BBJ Guest column: UAB needs own board – and bus leaders should help make it happen
Quote:The Birmingham business community needs to rise up. When UAB is discussed informally, I have heard no one speak in support of the board of trustees. The merits of the argument are essentially ceded against the trustees. Instead the discussion turns on the familiarity of the status quo: "The Board is too powerful,", "Things will never change," "It is what it is," "Maybe they will throw us a bone," "We cannot do anything about it." Hogwash. Although some may deny this, we live in the age of openness and transparency. No man or board is an island. Everyone is accountable. We cannot and should not let individuals whose economic fortunes are separate from our city derail our economic prosperity.
This.

These are the type of people we need to speak up. Not UAB boosters per se, but smart people of good will who understand that what has been done is wrong and that it damages the community at large.
