How is this for some symmetry.

1978 - a basketball coach named Gene Bartow who is about to be fired from his job at UCLA comes to Birmingham to create a new athletic department at UAB

201? - a basketball coach named Murry Bartow who is about to be fired from his job at ETSU comes to Birmingham to recreate the athletic department and rebuild his father's legacy under a reconstructed BOT.

I don't know if Murry could play the necessary political game, but after listening to his interview, he would be motivated to do what is necessary to protect his dad's legacy. And as he says, he is a UAB man.

I think Marla would be a great AD, but why would we want to hurt our most successful sports team?

UAB needs one of it's own, who knows how to navigate through rough athletic waters. I hope the new prez. understands that when he makes that hire.

I think we need to go outside UAB & hire someone who will stand up for the programs & has leadership skills, 2 things that have been lacking for years, that's not tainted in anyway to the relationships of UAB/UAT or state politics. Someone who isn't tainted one way or the other might be able to better represent athletics in dealings w/ the BOT

The desire for the "untainted outsider" is a common plea heard n all levels of state and national politics. That's how Alabama got Dr Bentley, and how the nation got President Carter.

It might work out if the outsider is knowledgeable of the obstacles that defeated the prior office holders and how to do better without relying on the staff of the former insider's choosing.
