RE: UC at NC State Gamethread
Somebody want to give a synopsis? Missed pretty muche entire thing except the brief comeback with about 5 min left (my fault, I quit watching immediately and turned on the radio and we sealed it out impressively).

Who said we had bad perimeter defense?

I was really impressed with the scorring distribution:

Thomas 15
Caupain 13
Ellis 11
Clark 9
DeBerry 9
Cobb 9

You really have to like that.

That was one of the most enjoyable UC games I have watched in some time. Cobb did a hell of a job bring the ball upcourt.
He was a steal, so was Deberry.

Cincinnati batters NC State, 76-60
By Joe Giglio

N.C. State's Abdul-Malik Abu (0) drives to the basket as Cincinnati's Troy Caupain (10) defends during the first half of the Wolfpack's game against Cincinnati at PNC Arena in Raleigh, N.C., Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2014. ETHAN HYMAN — ehyman@newsobserver.com

RALEIGH — Cincinnati's not Louisiana Tech. N.C. State learned that the hard way on Tuesday afternoon.

Just like the Louisiana Tech game a week ago, N.C. State fell behind by 18 points in the second half. Unlike that game, there was no comeback. The Bearcats wouldn't let it happen.

Shaq Thomas scored 15 points to lead Cincinnati to a 76-60 road win over N.C. State. The Bearcats' tough defense completely neutralized guard Trevor Lacey, N.C. State's best player, and kept N.C. State (10-4) out of sync all game.

Lacey, who entered the game averaging 18.0 points per game, missed his first seven shots from the floor and finished 1 of 8 for with six points.

Guard Cat Barber led N.C. State with 15 points. Forward Kyle Washington added 10 points.

Cincinnati, which came into the game ranked 302nd in the country in scoring offense (61.8 points per game), made eight of its first nine shots in the game and jumped out to a 20-8 lead in the first nine minutes of the game.

The Bearcats led 41-26 at the half and 50-32 at 17:09 in the second half — the same score from the second half of the Louisiana Tech game. But N.C. State couldn't mount a comeback against the aggressive Bearcats.

N.C. State got as close as 10 points, twice in the second half, but Cincinnati had the answer each time. A follow-up dunk by Octavius Ellis at 3:30 gave the Bearcats a 65-53 lead and basically put the game away.

Starting to? It was 6 at the 14 minute mark. I was fearing Nebraska all over again, but the main difference was the working margin, which was a lot this time.

Great win 04-bow

despite the stretch of stagnation in the second half, it's hard not to be pleased with the outcome today. I notice, said stagnation came with Moore and Clark were on the floor at the same time. If Ellis stays out of foul trouble, it bodes well for this team.(yes, I'm pointing out the obvious.) I was impressed with Cobb and Deberry today. EDIT* and Thomas. Quietly having good games.

Very nice win. No idea where NC St will end up this season, but winning on their court is big.

I think given the circumstances you have to give Davis, the coaches, and the players a pass for the VCU game.

Having said that, everyone (coaches and players) have been great these past two games. Kudos too Larry Davis. Hopefully they come back home and get another big win Saturday.

I was thinking the same thing. That Gottfried technical really turned the officiating against us but it didn't make a bit of difference in the outcome.

Cincinnati rolls past NC State 76-60

Associated Press

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Shaq Thomas matched his career high of 15 points to help Cincinnati beat North Carolina State 76-60 on Tuesday.

Troy Caupain added 13 points in a one-sided win for the Bearcats (9-3), who were without head coach Mick Cronin due to medical reasons for the third straight game. Cincinnati led just about the entire way and by double figures for most of the game, beating the Wolfpack (10-4) for the second straight season.

Cincinnati shot 54 percent, led 41-26 at halftime and pushed that margin to 19 midway through the second half. The Bearcats never that lead slip to single digits, either.

Anthony "Cat" Barber scored 15 points to lead N.C. State, though the Wolfpack's offense looked out of rhythm from the start against Cincinnati's press and zone defenses. N.C. State committed early turnovers to give the Bearcats momentum and found itself playing from behind nearly all afternoon.

Top scorer Trevor Lacey finished with just six points on 1-for-8 shooting, while outside shooter Ralston Turner finished with just five points -- a crippling lack of production for a team that has relied on its backcourt all season.

N.C. State, which had rallied from 18 down after halftime to beat Louisiana Tech in its last game, twice got the lead to 10 in the final 5 minutes.

But the Bearcats answered N.C. State's last push with three straight baskets, starting with Octavius Ellis dunking home a miss from Gary Clark then Thomas banking in a shot off a spin move.

Jermaine Sanders followed with a layup to make it 69-53 with 2:18 and essentially seal the win.

For Cincinnati, it was a good way to head into American Athletic Conference play this weekend. The Bearcats controlled the glass (31-26) and shot 14 for 23 (61 percent) after halftime to prevent the Wolfpack from stringing together any run-building baskets.

---

TIP-INS

Cincinnati: Freshman forward Gary Clark finished with nine points and four rebounds in his return to his home state. He is from Clayton, about 20 minutes east of Raleigh. ... Cronin hasn't coached since doctors discovered he had an unruptured aneurysm before a loss to VCU on Dec. 20.

N.C. State: The Wolfpack trailed 50-32 in the second half for the second straight game. ... This was N.C. State's final nonconference game of the season.

UP NEXT

Cincinnati hosts SMU in Saturday's league opener.

N.C. State hosts Pittsburgh on Saturday.

When Shaq plays within himself, good things will happen. Start of the year until now, probably our most improved player.

Easily the MVP today.

First time in a long time I've seen a UC basketball team play what I call UC basketball.

The best offensive performance in a long time-- movement, excellent passing ( there was just so many excellent passes made that we haven't seen this year ) and consistent shotmaking. Strong D at the rim and in front of the press. This might yet turn out to be a fun year.

Really liked interior passing and Clark, DeBerry and Ellis putting ball on the floor and driving to the rim.

Most fun I've had watching a UC game in a while. The ball and players move very well on offense. When it did stop it was down low and we usually got a decent shot. Shaq torched anyone that put pressure on him. Please, please, please let this continue.

They were hitting shots like crazy but I really think that was a product of getting better shots and forcing the ball inside. Lots of fun, props to the coaching staff especially Larry Davis.

I was only able to listen on the radio, but it really sounded like they were getting alot better shots with passing and off of steals and turnovers.

Incredible road win that will help pad the tournament resume come March. Missed the game live but finished watching it on my DVR. Shaq! I'm telling you if this guy can just figure out how to be consistent and build off of a successful game. DeBerry! Another guy that should continue to improve and can be a force in the post. Love his size and his hands are like a banana patch palming a bowling ball. Intrigued how he and Ellis could compliment one another and give us some good depth in size and post presence. Amazing how the Cats can look with some buckets (shot 54%) to go along with solid Dee. Can't wait to walk in the office on Friday with my head held high among many NC State fans. Bring on the AAC!

How many were down on this team in general...they must have a change of heart now. Great win for a young team.

Likely they'll be more bumps along the way, but this team coming together, and learning what they can (and can't) do.

DeBerry, Clark and Ellis make a formidable inside presence.

Just need someone besides Cobb to step in and consistently hit outside shots.
