with them, it appears to be an odd situation since they are a package deal. a coach has to want both (and have room and scholarships for both) and they both have to agree on where they want to go.

Correct. In order to move up to FBS we had to do this, and basketball was going to get a downgrade. Now if only we had the option to stay in CAA football and move to A10 in basketball, I would be all for that. However, schools like VCU with no football will never get higher than A10 (Big East is private schools only and all the other higher conferences require FBS football), while we still have the POTENTIAL to go higher. I think we can all agree we want to get there asap, but we have to maintain patience.

Sorry to bring those goats from rva into this, but it's something I've thought about recently. They are definitely on an elevated level compared to us right now, but being the #1 team in the A10 is the highest they can ever achieve. At least we still have hopes of leapfrogging into a better conference someday.
"Basketball was going to get a downgrade"? I remember all the talk about finally we were going to be able to shed the " mid-major label" We've shed it all right. As the #23 conference we are in low major conference. Look I love football but we ain't ever gonna be one of the magic 4. Any real athletic success for us lies in hoops. We need to get in the AAC fast.

I still see alot of unrealized potential for CUSA Basketball. The CAA is dead meat.

True and true. Wouldn't be so bad if UAB, MTSU, WKU, UTEP, USM, LT, Rice, ODU and Marshall all got to their potential at the same time. But the others will always be bad.

Won't be so bad if the top six fight to the death but never lose to those outside the clique. It would be encouraging to see incremental improvements year to year for them though. Kinda embarrassing to have the back end of the conference in the same breath as bottom-feeder low-majors.

There was a time in the 90s when Mason finished either dead last or tied for last in the CAA for 7 straight years. So you might want to hold off on absolute statements like "they'll always be bad."

I'd add Charlotte to that list as well.

Looks like we got a bit derailed again, so back to recruiting news. Bad news is still news. Expected news is still news. A 4-star center in the 2017 class ODU offered has committed to Villanova. Shocking news guys!

Here's his verbal commits site: http://www.verbalcommits.com/players/dha...-roundtree

RE: 2016 Old Dominion Basketball Recruiting Den
I think I found it. Here's a snippet of an article about an OT win where he scored a career high.

Quote:“We weren’t talking about what we were gonna do on offense,” senior guard Khary Mauras said. “Defense is our key, so when we came in at halftime, we were talking about what we were gonna do on defense to stop them. Once we stopped them, the offense comes to us and we just score.”

Utilizing a full-court press to smother Conestoga’s guard-heavy attack, Reading got itself back into the game before ultimately toppling the Pioneers, 68-61, in overtime at Philadelphia University.

Leading the way for the Red Knights on both ends was Mauras, a three-year starter in the backcourt. The 6-foot-1 speedster got loose for a career-high 24 points and was constantly pestering opposing ballhandlers all over the court, coming up with seemingly every loose ball to help his team seize momentum in front of a pro-Reading crowd.

Performances like that have become commonplace for Mauras, and head coach Rick Perez knows he can count on his senior leader to bring the same passion to every game.

“That’s Khary every single day. That’s him in practice, that’s him in the games, that’s been him since tenth grade,” Perez said. “We know that and we appreciate that. He plays with that same energy and that same grit every single game.”

His team lost by 1 last night in the 2nd rd of the JC national tournament (he had a nice alley-oop dunk too)

He's starting to pick up some more offers, all mids.

Update on Freddie McSwain, as it looks like he's committed to Indiana.

Tough to be upset about losing out to Indiana.

I like the level of recruits that ODU is going after. We have offers out to several 4-star guys.

Would be nice to land one as a freshman.

Looks like we've offered Eddie Scott, Gonzaga HS in DC
6-5, 2.5*, lots of competition and, obviously, a very smart kid
