RE: 2016 Old Dominion Basketball Recruiting Den
I just don't get why a kid would want to play for a school that never really wanted him. What makes a school "bigger"? Its the players. Seems a kid would think he could come to ODU and make it "bigger". Is VT "bigger" in hoops because its in the ACC? Theres a good argument against that. I would think a player who was recruited hard by ODU for years would much prefer to come to the better team, better program and better coaches who have shown him a lot of love rather than be won over by the letters ACC at the last minute at VT for example. But it just doesn't seem to work that way. I'd feel the same way as a lower level recruit too. Id rather play for UNC Ashville for example, if they had recruited me for years and treated me right, rather than get swept away by ODU at the last minute.
Blaine got sick of it and stopped recruiting known talent. All he went after at the end was athleticism, defense and size. Seemed he figured he had a better shot of teaching a kid offense than convincing high level talent to spurn the last minute wooing of the ACC/BE/SEC. Of course, that didn't work out so well either.

Playing the ACC > playing in CUSA. that's just the way it is. I can name every school in the ACC without really thinking about it. most people I know (who are college basketball fans) can't do the same for CUSA. perhaps that's not a fair comparison, but I bet its very similar to these prospects as well when they talk to each other about which schools are interested in them...and I think ODU is a great program and I think it would be desirable for a lot of highly rated players, but I don't get surprised when these guys opt for the ACC, BIG, SEC schools.

As much as I hate to say it (and maybe wash my mouth out with soap) until we have a run to the Final Four like Mason and VCU and have SUSTAINED national prominence like VCU I don't expect the big named recruits to come here. What I do like is JJ's attitude so far to go after these type players. I think with this Lucas guy what won was the conference affiliation and it being closer to home.

Remember this: VCU went to the final four with all 2 star players. Now they may have improved beyond that once in school. Trey Freeman was a 2-star recruit. Does he play like a 2 star? Hell no. What pisses me off about this stuff is the Lucas kid was a 2-star until yesterday. He goes to Illinois and now he's a 3.3? Unless you're dealing with bonafide 5 stars, these classifications to me mean nothing. They went after Lucas because obviously there was something in their relationship that both parties th9ought was worth pursuing and because they liked the way the kid would have fit in. I'll say this: I'm stunned Trey and Baze couldn't sell the kid on ODU
You know we're in good shape at the point with Trey and Caver.

Yeah, but we're recruiting now for the players that try to fill Trey's shoes. Caver sounds good, but he needs a backup or someone to push him.

I understand that, but if we don't get one out of HS this year and want experience, we've got the JUCO route, maybe even overseas or mid-year transfer. It's not like we wouldn't have options

Everything I saw on Lucas before yesterday had him as a 3 star to 4 star rated player. Where did you see him as a 2 star?

I think Dahi was a big prospect, but I started following his freshman year after the recruiting so I don't know if we actually won a battle or he fell in our laps.
We actually won the battle for Dahi over Wisconsin. That was a big deal. The last player we even got away from what I would call a peer program was Chris Cooper who we got when he had an offer from GMU. Caver and Talley seem like they will be good players. I'm hearing really good things about Caver especially. Not sure why these coaches seem to have trouble closing the deal. We've got a great team, great facilities, great fans, great coaches... I'd rather play basketball at ODU than VT, VCU or GMU if I were a player.
IIRC it was a school in SE Penn. which starts with a "T", and whose mascot has feathers, which we beat out for Chris Cooper.
Well done, PB2. I appreciate your effort in not typing that word.
I see everything.

Hey, what are you doing here? Did we steal another recruit from Jersey?

But this is one of the hardest things to acquire in college basketball: depth of talent at a position.
Lucas was a quality recruit but when he arrives on Illinois' campus the only person, at the moment, he has to compete with is a Senior. Which means he will be in the driver's seat for playing time the rest of his collegiate career.
ODU already has a quality recruit (Caver) coming in this year at the position Lucas plays. The competition outlook is much more fierce at ODU.
Losing out on Lucas isn't so much a statement of our weakness but rather our strength.

Why is a Temple fan so obsessed with ODU that he is following our recruiting? Is it phallic envy?

He went to school in philly which means he's unaware how bad he smells, and how awful everyone is around him so his natural instinct is to pollute everything in his path. Kind of like the stink beetle. But not as smart.
