Guess you don't remember him bouncing the ball off his legs out of bounds about every third time bringing the ball up the court his first two years. He was an athlete for sure but had not learned to be a basketball player yet. Besides all the turnovers his first two years, he shot 43% from the foul line and 26% from three as a freshman.
In my estimation he was the MVP of the CAAT as a sophomore. He showed signs of being a NBA talent early in his ODU career. Too many people focus on what a player can't do and miss what they can do.
Well said. We have a lot of folks on this board who focus on mistakes. It has always bothered me from KB to Batten to Arledge now, certain people talk about them as if they are a liability due to their mistakes. And the fact is, those players don't make many more mistakes than other players, its just that the mistakes they make make you say WTF just happened. No matter how spectacular a mistake is a mistake, and all of those guys were solid contributors. If we had Batten this year, he would be the second best 3 point shooter on the team and would add an ability to attack the rim that Ambrose and Jordan just haven't shown, yet some will say good riddence any time his name is mentioned.
End rant.

Its ridiculous to compare Baze as a freshman to anyone. Baze was worse than most guys we bring in as a freshman. That in no way indicates that with enough hard work, every player we recruit can be as good as Baze.

We as fans always compare players and you're right we shouldn't, just like we shouldn't put too much in recruiting ratings. Baze came out of HS with one offer and zero ratings. He was special, how many players are in the NBA who came out of HS with no rating.
I'm seeing Neville Fincher, 6-10, PF, Soph, Juco is getting some renewed interest from ODU. ODUDad and I saw him play with the guys in pickup game a few years at the practice gym when BT was recruiting him. He looked like a solid big, ran the floor well and played about the rim. He ended up taking a K State offer over ODU, Clemson, Providence and VCU. Didn't qualify and went JuCo route.

Possibly. But the ability to shoot 3s becomes shadowed when you don't buy into the current team dynamic, do the little effort plays, and mesh with the current chemistry.

Xavier had 23 in the lost tonight.

I'd have to disagree that Bazemore is head and shoulders above everyone on the current team. I'd consider Bazemore equal to Freeman. Bazemore's defense = Freeman's offense. Offensively, Freeman is the best pure shooter this team has seen in a very long time.

Because rebuilding a 5-25 roster to compete right away means you can't afford to go after a big man project. It's similar to what ODU football did when moving to FBS--they went JUCO for some big boys.
Is anyone doubting that it's clearly working? We've won 20 games.

The midrange game of Baze was deadly, even better than Freeman.
Baze is the only ODU player in the last 18 years to shoot above 40 percent from three for an entire season. The next one was Mark Poag.
Baze JR: .481 Two Point FG% .408 Three Point FG %
Freeman JR: .441 Two Point FG% .364 Three Point FG%
I'd say their defense is comparable when all things are taken into account. Baze was going to blow up, be a 20/5/5 player heading into his senior season before blowing out his foot in the 7CitiesProAm.

Pervier can appeal for a 2nd year of eligibility, so we'll see what happens...

No doubt Baze would have had an absurd senior year (it was still very good once he got in the groove) if he hadn't gotten injured.

Just got back from watching Marquis Godwin, 2017, SG, putting on a show as Hampton beat Menchville. Godwin ended up with 36pts, I think it was a career high. He also went 8 of 8 from the charity strip. At one point he hit 4 three pointers in a row. John was there taking in the show. Hampton plays tomorrow night for District/conference title at Warwick vs Indian River. Worth a watch.

Indeed, hopefully someone will want to stay home. We have a very good reputation in the Peninsula District. One of the good things Blaine did was start building that.

RE: 2016 Old Dominion Basketball Recruiting Den
Menchville's DeQuon Lake, 6-7, 2015, a Virgin Island native was eating it up around the basket last night with 19pts and had the play of the night with a rebound dunk. He's a long player, who has a lot of potential. DeQuon has come a long ways in the development of his game, he might be one of the most untapped, raw players with the most upside in the PD. He shoots at a high percentage with most of his shots at the rim, and is an excellent shot blocker. I know we've been watching him for a while, played AAU on Team Loaded. I'm thinking he might be worth a shot.

@coreyevans_10: Old Dominion head coach Jeff Jones and an ast, along with Virginia Tech, are on hand for 2016 STAB forward Javin DeLaurier
He had 30pts tonight, high target. Stith was the assistant coach with JJ.

Don't know if it should go in this thread or the 14'/15' thread but with UVA losing, it will be interesting to see if we see any news of a possible Stith transfer.
