via SMDR TXST beat writer:

"A source told me today that should Boise State win MW title game, Cactus Bowl would take No. 3 Mountain West team (Utah State).
Same source indicated that scenario would open up three more (potential) bowl slots for #TXST: New Mexico, Hawaii and Idaho Bowls."

we're looking at Sunday before we hear anything either way.

No source is needed, MWC is the Cactus back up. They did the same thing the AAC did with the Liberty bowl. If it became available, it moved up in the pecking order since it was against a mid level P5. The question is which bowl does MWC not fill Boise or New Orleans. AF will grab an SEC or ACC at-large team if available. In addition, ACC and SEC prefer post Christmas Bowls if at all possible. Bad feeling MWC fills Boise Bowl that will leave the AF with P5 and New Orleans bowl needing a team outside the Sunbelt.

There isn't an SEC at large available unless something crazy happens. (Bama losing and dropping out of the Top 4)

That then leads to the question of, does the ACC want to fill Armed Forces, when its not anywhere close to other ACC schools?

RE: Sun Belt Nation: Operation Get Texas State to a Bowl
more from the SMDR

"Texas State is running low on bowl options, but still has a chance to secure its first-ever postseason trip.

The Bobcats (7-5) do know one thing: they won’t be going to a Sun Belt bowl. UL Lafayette (8-4), Arkansas State (7-5) and South Alabama (6-6) have all accepted invites to the New Orleans, GoDaddy and Camellia bowls, respectively.

With that in mind, Texas State will be looking for an at-large bowl bid. The Bobcats have already been tied to the Armed Forces Bowl in Fort Worth, the Cactus Bowl in Tempe, Arizona, and the Heart of Dallas Bowl.

A source confirmed to the Daily Record that an invite to the Cactus Bowl is unlikely. The bowl is expected to select the No. 3 team from the Mountain West Conference (Utah State).

The same source indicated that Texas State could be in the running for three other bowls (New Mexico, Hawaii and Idaho). All three bowls have tie-ins to the Mountain West Conference.

Here’s where things get a little complicated. With a victory over Fresno State in the MWC Championship Game on Saturday, Boise State would be in line for one of the New Years Day bowls possibly the Fiesta Bowl.

Should that happen, the Mountain West wouldn’t be able to fill its six bowl tie-ins meaning an at-large team such as the Bobcats could receive an at-large invite.

At the moment, there are 79 bowl eligible teams and 76 available slots. Oklahoma State (5-6) and Temple (5-6) remain as the only two teams that can become bowl eligible this weekend. The Cowboys face Oklahoma in the Bedlam Game in Norman, Oklahoma, while the Owls meet Tulane.

Should both teams fall, Texas State has a strong chance to go to a bowl game considering UAB (6-6) and Ohio (6-6) are considered as long shots to secure a bid.

The Bobcats remain in contact with both the Armed Forces Bowl and Heart of Dallas Bowl. Neither bowl is likely to invite a team until this weekend’s games are over, meaning Texas State will have to wait it out until Sunday.

In four days, we’ll all know."

I would love to see the SB get a team in over the MAC, AAC and CUSA. Wish you all the best. Yes, the ACC will not leave a bowl eligible team at home. Swofford has always found them a landing spot. If things hold up though, the ACC will not have to worry about that since it will be getting an Extra Bowl Slot on NYD in the BWW Citrus Bowl if Mich State goes to the Orange. I would love to see Texas St go to a Bowl and Temple stay home. In addition, I think for their not to be a P5 at-large. The SEC and B10 would both have to send 3 teams. The odds of that happening are slim. You would need Missouri to Beat Alabama and Wisc to beat OSU. I am not sure OSU would stay in the Top 10 if that happened. I think the conference breakdown for the CFP will be as follows.

SEC - Three teams (Bama, Ole Miss & MSU)
B10 - (OSU and MSU)
B12 - (Baylor and TCU)
ACC - (FSU and GT)
PAC 12 - (Oregon and Az)
G5 - MWC

I just want to say thanks to everyone for the support and all the effort you guys are putting in to support the Sun Belt and Texas State.

We all talked a lot of trash to each other during conference play, and that is perfectly OK and healthy. In non-conference situations we should all support each other and its refreshing to see the support for Texas State in this situation. I'm certain any other team in the same situation would get the same support (yes, even Georgia Southern).

I'm echoing what you said. You have all been awesome and we appreciate the support!!!!! For the players I hope we can get into a game. They deserve it!!

From what I'm hearing the decision is going to come down to if the MWC is going to send a team to new orleans or not because they are going to take the Cactus bowl. Cajun fans send your Administration emails that you want to see the cajuns against the mwc and not a CUSA team! (MTSU, WKU, or Rice) This would give us a shot at either Idaho, Hawaii, or Albuquerque. Frankly I don't care which one!

That basically means, if they don't send the #6/#7 MWC team to NOLA to play y'all, the CUSA has a back up to the NOLA bowl and you'll be playin WKU/MTSU/Rice

If they do send them, We would take their spot in Albuquerque and MTSU would be out of a bowl at 6-6...

WE NEED YOUR HELP!!!

A UAB grad, and media member, who is helping to contact bowls on behalf of UAB says the Armed Forces and HOD have Texas State on their radar should they need a team. They feel the Bobcats are obviously a better geographic fit.

BeliefBlazer thanks for the info. What happened at UAB is a tragedy to college football and your University. I'm rooting for all of those players and your community. P5 Politics once again destroying the G5. Anything we can do to help UAB just say it!

As far as the bowls go Armed Forces has a CUSA back up, contracted, so we can't get into it because the CUSA is over.

and the HOD is going to get filled by a P5 team unfortunately. Our only real shot is if MWC sends a team to NOLA and we can get into potato, hawaii or new mexico bowl

CONFERENCE USA ANNOUNCES FUTURE BOWL LINE-UP

League Confirms Nine Bowl Partners in Fantastic Locations

IRVING, Texas – Conference USA Commissioner Britton Banowsky and the league’s Board of Directors have confirmed nine bowl affiliations through the 2019 season, securing a minimum of five berths annually and offering fans a number of great destinations between the Atlantic and the Pacific Oceans.
Conference USA has announced new bowl agreements this month with the Bahamas Bowl, Miami Beach Bowl and the ESPN owned and operated Boca Raton Bowl. Additionally, C-USA maintains relationships with four other ESPN bowls: Beef `O' Brady's Bowl in St. Petersburg, Fla., Heart of Dallas Bowl presented by PlainsCapital Bank in Dallas, Texas, Gildan New Mexico Bowl in Albuquerque and the Sheraton Hawai'i Bowl in Honolulu, as well as the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl.
Conference USA has secondary agreements with two bowls also located right within the league’s footprint, giving teams the opportunities to participate in the Armed Forces Bowl in Fort Worth, Texas and the AdvoCare V100 Bowl in Shreveport, La.

"Our future bowl line-up is truly amazing,” Banowsky said. “We have been fortunate to partner with great bowls in the past. In addition to the bowls within our members’ footprint, fans also have some tremendous destinations to see their favorite teams play.”

In these bowls, Conference USA will have the opportunity to face opponents from the American Athletic, Big 12, Big Ten, Mid-American, Mountain West and Sun Belt Conferences.

The following is a breakdown of C-USA’s nine bowl partners:

The Bahamas Bowl will join the bowl line-up in 2014 as the only postseason college football game outside of the United States. The inaugural game will be held in the new Thomas A. Robinson Stadium in Nassau, Bahamas. Conference USA expects to face a team from the Mid-American Conference in 2015, the American Athletic Conference in 2018 and the Sun Belt Conference in 2019.

Beef ‘O’ Brady’s St. Petersburg Bowl began in 2008 and has had a Conference USA participant since its inception, and has been victorious the past two seasons. This bowl is owned and operated by ESPN and held prior to Christmas each year at Tropicana Field, the home of the Tampa Bay Rays. C-USA will meet a team from the American Athletic Conference a minimum of three years.

The Boca Raton Bowl will be played in FAU Stadium on the campus of C-USA member Florida Atlantic University. It is the newest bowl announced that will be run by ESPN. The league will send a team to a minimum of four Boca Raton Bowls, beginning in 2014 against the Mid-American Conference. C-USA will face a member of the American Athletic Conference in later years.

Conference USA Announces Future Bowl Line Up, page 2
Conference USA will enter its first-year as a primary partner with the Gildan New Mexico Bowl and will send a team to Albuquerque all six years between 2014 and 2019. C-USA will face a representative from the Mountain West Conference each season at University Stadium on the campus of the University of New Mexico.

The Heart of Dallas Bowl presented by PlainsCapital Bank was established in 2012 with the unique perspective of creating an event that will give back to its community. The Heart of Dallas is a non-profit dedicated to supporting causes in the Dallas area, using sports and entertainment as a vehicle to help gain awareness. Conference USA expects to play in the bowl six years and will alternate opponents from the Big Ten and Big 12 as teams meet in the historic Cotton Bowl Stadium.

The Miami Beach Bowl will also host its first game during the 2014 season, with Conference USA expected to face a team from the American Athletic Conference in 2014 and 2015. The American will own and operate the Miami Beach Bowl, which will be held at Marlins Park – the home of Major League Baseball’s Miami Marlins. Marlins Park is located on the former site of the historic Orange Bowl Stadium in Miami. Conference USA will play in the bowl a minimum of three years.

The R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl has hosted a Conference USA team nine times during its 12-year history, with a current C-USA team winning six of those 12 bowls. The game will continue to be played at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. C-USA is scheduled to be involved in three games over the next six years.
C-USA also resumes its long-term partnership with the Sheraton Hawai’i Bowl to play in the annual Christmas Eve game. A C-USA team has participated in, and won, the last four games in Honolulu. Following a 2013 meeting with a Mountain West team, the two conferences will square off again at Aloha Stadium in 2014, 2016 and 2018.
Conference USA enters a new secondary partnership with the AdvoCare V100 Bowl, played at Independence Stadium in Shreveport, La. C-USA will provide a surplus team to the bowl in the event the Southeastern Conference or Atlantic Coast Conference are unable to provide a team.

I wonder if their secondary tie in is with AAC not filling. Cause the Army back up is Big 12.
