Ice is definitely more dangerous than snow.

Learn it. Know it. Live it.

Those are no good for down here, the ice only lasts a couple days at best.

Technically, snow tires are the best tires for any condition when the temperature is under 40 degrees. Though certainly that doesn't apply for many winter situations it the south.

With my snow tires and front wheel drive, I can out drive just about anything except full time 4WD. And I can out drive full time 4WD if they have summer tires or worn all-season tires.

Seriously, snow tires were the biggest driving revelation I've ever had.
The problem we have down here is we rarely get too much advanced notice to swap out the tires.

When the Blizzard of March 1993 hit down here it was 70+ degrees and we had severe storms several days before. We had actually been out on Lake Murray fishing the Sunday before in shorts and a tshirt.

We had accumulating snow down here Nov 1. Two days before it was 80 degrees.

When you say snow tires, are you talking about the tires with metal knobbies on them?

But then I Googled. Not bad looking tires at all

Yeah, and snow tires are surprisingly effective in mud as well.

The only problem is part of why they are effective in snow and ice is the fact that the compound is extremely soft. For that reason they wear out extremely fast in warm weather, and really fast in the hot weather we have down here.

Like BF Goodrich tires. I had a '97 Chevy with 15" x 10" rims and I bought some BF Goodrich 295/50 R15's for them. Man, those soft tires looked AMAZING for about 6 months. Then within 6 more, I was replacing them again. 50+ miles per day on them.

Yeah, I had some 33" BF Goodrich Mud Terrains for my Jeep. After going through a second set so quick the dude at the tire store suggested it would be cheaper for me to buy a cheap set of rims to mount them on for hunting season and buy a harder set of all terrains for the rest of the year.

I had some 33" Goodyear Wrangler T/A's on my 1999 4x4 Tahoe, then got a 2003 Ford F-150 4x4 a year and a half later, put those tires on it because the rims were the same size, and got rid of the Ford two years later with those same 33's on it. Still had really good tread too. By far the best set of tires I ever bought.
