Refuse? Probably not. They were forced to play UAB in the basketball NIT one time.

I wouldn't be shocked to see a handful of FBS schools either drop down to FCS or stop playing all together. Football is crazy expensive and typically put on the backs of students. I've thought for many years that the service academies shouldn't be playing FBS football.

Seems to be football only that they behave that way. We play them in bball and baseball.

First of all Atlanta if the playoffs were expanded to 16 it would involve none to very few g5 teams and probably no sbc cusa or mac teams.
But i suppose in a magical world where that did happen I suppose they would have no choice.
But they will play ga so. But will never schedule troy st. Usa or any other football team in alabama. Please feel free to point out an exception.

Georgia State would go to CUSA if UAB got the boot.

Not playing you and worrying about you stealing their pick of the litter are 2 way different things.

Not saying this is likely anytime soon. But what if the play off were expanded to 16 teams in the future and Troy or usa made it in... Would Alabama refuse to play them in playoffs?

Alabama played us once in the NCAA tourney and lost, but I dunno if thats the same thing as football since football is the sacred cow.

Auburn doesnt have the same ****** attitude. Theyll play instate schools.
Alabama fears giving legitimacy to instate schools. I suppose they are afraid someone will forego that bamer shirt at walmart for some other school.
it required the state to step in an force ua to play au and look what happened.

The legislature sets the education budget for all public schools in Alabama. UAB and UAT are the only football programs which share a board. If UAT decided to shutdown any program in Alabama minus Auburn it would probably be successful. Unfortunately for the others schools (and the residents) UAT and Auburn control Montgomery.

Multiple sources now reporting on this rumor.

This could be

1) A serious trial balloon to guage how much anger there would be if UAB dropped football.

2) A threat to the UAB donor community to step it up or else

3) Just talk and speculation.

-----

Lets be clear, with the exception of perhaps one Sun Belt program, this is NOT good news as it opens up a slot in CUSA.

----

Where would UAB play basketball if they dropped football? They probably would have to leave CUSA and I'm not sure the A-10 would have them (they might - but I'm thinking no). Perhaps rejoin the Sun Belt as a basketball member?

They might not add anyone. Remember they've got too many teams as it is. It is unlikely that it would be Georgia State. I'd be real worried about losing Arkansas State if I'm the Belt.

Hey, they can go add JMU or UMass! Problem solved.

Historically, Alabama wouldn't play any instate school in basketball. That ended when USA was paired up with UA in the 1989 NCAA tournament. That game was won by .... USA.

Then the son of the former USA AD became the Head Coach at Alabama (Mark Gottfried). USA and Alabama have played several times since then.

Basketball and Football are different games entirely.

It does seem the "top" schools in Georgia have a somewhat better relationship with the other D1 schools than in Alabama. We play Georgia in football at least once every 4 years and we played Ga. Tech this year. Both Georgia and Ga. Tech come to Statesboro to play baseball. Occasionally we play them in basketball also.

If CUSA could magically reduce to 12 right now I think they would do. I don't believe they will be adding anyone unless they drop below 12.

I don't think they'd sit at 13.

That is my fear. It creates unstable divisions. But its possible that they would stay at 13.

I swear, it really sucks to have a Tuscaloosan in the Governors Mansion right now. UAB alumni need to be contacting the Governor and their State Reps.

I think you people fail to realize that this may be exactly what the SBC needs to convince USM to join. DOWN WITH UAB FOOTBALL 02-13-banana /sarcasm

On a more serious note, I would hate to see any program drop football. Hope this turns out to be nothing more than a rumor.

I hope UAB can prevent this from happening. I really believe the Sun Belt's best days are ahead but if UAB is out and CUSA expands by 1 here we go all again. I say this as a Ga. Southern fan when I say I hope we all stay in the Belt and built it up.
