Thanks again for your insight....which was from once again your living room. Were you at the Memphis game? Toledo? Miami?
Let's see the MSU story was about "...the pockets of empty seats that filled the student section during Saturday's prime-time, nationally televised game against the Cornhuskers." Not quite the same since PBS had less than 3,000 fans in their seats at the start of the 4th quarter. But, of course, you wouldn't know that....
Here's a more representative pic from the MSU game after it was over...

Season ticket holders around us in the Club level took off during the end of the 1st quarter. Then the rest by the 3rd quarter. Less than 3,000 people by the time the 4th quarter rolled around. Less than 500 students remained.
I thought 10 years of new fans with all the winning under Dantonio, Kelly, and Jones was going to keep our program with strong attendance, not fall back to the 80's. Nice theory, but those new fans aren't use to mediocre football led by coaches with zero passion.
I still can't believe that we have fallen so fast.....(pic from 3rd quarter)
In the club section most people where inside the club eating and drinking than in their seats watching UC get whipped by Memphis in the cold. While the team's record and performance matters the weather seams to factor into the equation more than anything else.
More Cincy excuses....the weather???? It was in the low 50's at kickoff. It wasn't in the 20's with snow and ice. My friend is right...UC fans don't deserve a P5 invite. The Club was pretty empty in between the 3rd and 4th quarter when I made a quick bathroom run.
Yep, you'd never see anything like that anywhere else in the world. Well I mean except for the very same night in an adjoining state where you had a top 10 team like Michigan St. (btw playing in a college town i.e. no pro sports) WINNING a P5 conference game against a big "name" team like Nebraska for example. (Anyone with a friend who thinks Michigan St. deserves to get kicked out of the P5?)

MSU AD upset by student section
MSU highlights student attendance woes
and this from Feb:
Quote:Big Ten schools focus on student turnout
February, 17, 2014
By Adam Rittenberg | ESPN.com
It's not surprising that Big Ten athletic directors spent part of their meeting last week discussing football attendance, a growing concern despite the sport's surging popularity.
The real surprise: How much the ADs focused on a group whose devotion to gamedays rarely is questioned. They're the folks with the shortest commute to stadiums, discounted tickets and the most direct connection to the team on the field. And yet they're showing up less and less, even in regions where football resonates the most.
"How many stories were written this fall about student attendance?" Illinois athletic director Mike Thomas asked during a recent interview. "Even SEC schools like Alabama, we're talking about a drop in attendance. In 2012 and 2013, that was the difference for us, our student numbers....
Yeah the headlines I linked focus on students at one particular schools game and in one conference but as the articles and video mention, it's not just students and it's not just msu or the big 10 or even college football. But the point (for all of you "woe is us" obsessives) is it's also not just UC or Cincinnati fans. It's so obvious even Mike Thomas figured it out. Full game attendance is an issue for just about every major team in every sport in the US. It's not a "UC fan" phenomenon and it's also not completely tied to wins and losses although that's certainly a factor.
That's the first I've seen that bad at a top Big 10 school. I've certainly seen attendance problems at ACC games on TV.
I don't know, I think they might be creating a TV monster with these conference networks + all the other stations covering games. You can certainly do all the things at home (or a friends house) like grill out and party.
I remember the article I saw about the Maryland President or AD expressing concern to the B1G Commish about keeping up attendance-wise with some B1G schools. Delany told them its all about eyes on TV now.
That might turn out to be more true than was ever thought.
Senior can elaborate on this, but Michigan ilis having attendance woes too. First time I ever remember them having to do group deals and giveaways to get people in the seats and retention has been AWFUL at games this year, though that's related to the product they're putting it out this year too.

RE: Unacceptable
Anyone who left that game early gets a presidential and papal pardon.
It's not bragging but for the 20+ on this board who know me in terra firma, for a couple decades I have probably logged more miles and spent more $$ following this squad around hell's half acre than just a handful of folks in Bearcatland whom I generally know by face or name (its a small gaggle) a couple of whom hang out here...and I am not watching fundam tally bad, unprepared, no emotion football. And that is what this is so far.
UL, and USF got rid of their own Kragthorp's and Skip Holtz' when the diehards had had enough. Not saying we are there yet, but daayum...I left early at OSU (with Tony Pike... Great story) and did not finish the third quarter in the Memphis game. That never happens.
I have already told BearcatJim that I am still in for Halloween in NOLA with him but I won't pay and spend time watching the Tulane game if this dreck is still the norm. This staff has not earned my unquestioning support.
As I stated in the title of this thread this is simply unacceptable.
No excuses.

I not only stayed until the last grinding down was played - I and about 35 other people (no joke) stayed and watched the fireworks of mockery.
The lights were out and the faces were pained and glum. It was a grotesque theatre of irony. The most depressing maudlin scene you can imagine.
And what pray tell was the first and centerpiece song the fireworks launched to?
The classic anthem of despair and futility from The WHO - "Won't get Fooled Again"
I sh*ttest thou not.

Wow. I'll ignore all the unnecessary arrogance, ignorance and condescension and simply ask: Why no link to the article where that picture came from? Nevermind, I found it:
Fans bailed early on Michigan State’s win over Nebraska, and MSU isn’t happy about it
Quote:Fans bailed early on Michigan State’s win over Nebraska, and MSU isn’t happy about it
By Zach Barnett on October 6, 2014
The relationship between college football programs who host games and the fans who attend them has never been more one-sided. Programs are courting the fan, massaging the fan, coaxing the fan and all but pleading with the fan to hop off his couch and see a game in person (while buying a large popcorn, a Coke or Pepsi product and a licensed t-shirt).
The conversation usually goes something like this: “We’ll do our best to create a team worth supporting and an environment worth experiencing, and you’ll show up to support us.”
We’ve seen what happens when a school doesn’t hold up its end of the bargain, but what about when it goes the other way?
Exhibit A in this case may have happened Saturday night in East Lansing. After the hometown Spartans built a 27-3 lead on undefeated Nebraska in a huge Big Ten showdown, ABC cameras showed multiple overhead shots of Spartan Stadium with massive swaths of completely empty bleachers.

Michigan State athletic director Mark Hollis then tweeted some strong words for fans, especially students, who ducked out early...
Huh, guess it wasn't just the students (just as I originally noted above) - thanks for finding more fuel to my point. The articles and video note that the problem isn't just from that game, team, conference or sport - but I guess you were too busy coming up with miserable snark to actually read what I wrote along with the links and vid.

You probably have a point as I s'pose I do enjoy a bit of snark now and then although I try to never make mine of the miserable variety (btw I should note that I don't particularly appreciate being used in an Al Queda analogy but I'll assume no offense intended - unlike the intent behind the post I responded to).
I did quite a bit of re-writing before settling on "snark" in an effort to remain somewhat polite and respectful and to avoid engaging in a personal pissing contest with what I considered to be a rude, false, incindiary and classless response to my post. Perhaps I should have just said that instead, but I'll let the record stand as is (minus any deleted posts anyone else felt the need to remove)...

My father is a msu alum. Students only partially showing has been happening for decades. Heck, some games it's not just the students. Especially, for those cold late season games, where msu had some mediocre to terrible teams. Maybe things have been different during MD's tenure, however seems its business as usual in East Lansing.

This staff's performance is completely unacceptable. Again. Bad defense. Bad special teams. Bad running game.
No energy on sideline again.
Our staff is so mid pack in this bad conference.
The wrong hire has made bad hires and this is what we get. The current trajectory of this program is heading to the Rick Minter zip code.
The guys who get pissed at this post will come around eventually.
Still unacceptable.
New week, another embarrassing effort.
If this program was a horse, in 4 of our last 6 games in the race guide it would say "dull effort" or "no threat". Bravo.
