My question is this, however. How bad are the teams we've played from other G5 conferences? I mean UAB destroys Troy and UTSA destroys Houston. I know transitive doesn't apply, but a couple weeks later and both of them lose to FIU and FAU, who didn't have stellar OOC records.

It just seems crazy that we are probably going to end up beating the hell out of each other again after a fairly successful beginning and have nothing to show for it.

You can make fun of the fans all you want. South Florida has horrid sports fans. That is a way different issue then acting like they can't compete or that a loss to them is a disgrace

Hate to break it to you guys but fau can compete in cusa. They have already proven that

Actually you can stop. You're just choosing not to. You're not petty like AndreWhere, you're better than this.

Agreed. Most teams in S Fl have horrid fan support.

Even at the Miami vs Duke game today there were only 45k.

So many things to do, so many migrants, great weather all year round equals lousy college sports support in South Florida.

Exactly.

Combo makes it difficult to get people out for anything but big games. Fortunately for Miami we've got two games pretty much sold out due to 'big name' opponents in UNC and FSU combined with an improving team, but without that it'd be really sad. It still is.

Compare Miami with a place like Tallahassee or Gainesville where literally all there is to do is go to a football game... 01-lauramac2

How are the schools of southern Florida different from USC and UCLA? They have the pro-sports, weather, migrants, etc that Florida does, but they have packed houses. Not smack, serious question. Maybe it's just overwhelming population in the area that fills them up. I don't know.

I've never understood the "too many other things to do in Miami" excuse for poor fan support, especially for pro sports. There are lots of things to do in NYC, LA, Chicago, name a city. South Florida does have bad sports fans and nobody should make excuses for them.

Well if you are comparing FAU and FIU to USC and UCLA, don't. The biggest difference is between those programs is, oh, about 100 years of football history. If you are lumping UM into that mix, it may have to do with UM playing at a stadium pretty far off campus, being relatively small private school, and not being very good at the moment. Not to mention, LA's population is about 4 times that of South Florida.

I'm not a UM fan, but those are major factors that effect their attendance. Sun Life Stadium is also seats 73,000 people, so even a 40,000 person crowd will look fairly pathetic. With that stadium being renovated after this Dolphins season, and about 10,000 seats being removed in the process, their attendance will suddenly look a lot better next year.

As for my team, the Owls absolutely need to draw more fans. I've actually been pleasantly surprised at how good the first 2 home games have been attended. I know they only have had about 14,000 announced, but those are legit 14,000. In years past, they would have announced 15K and there would have actually been 8K in the building. Building a fan base starts with the students, and the football staff has really made engaging them a large priority this year and it is working. I cannot speak for FIU, but FAU seems to finally be on the right path. It will take time, but we are getting there.

L.A. has bad sports fan as well. They love the Lakers and USC and UCLA are historic universities but there is a reason why the NFL isn't in Los Angeles and they once had two teams. NYC and Chicago isn't known for their beaches like Miami and L.A and are mainly professional sports town moreso than college. The University of Miami is a private school that doesn't have the tradition and history of USC and UCLA even the Hurricanes have won national championships in football.

Miami and cities like Atlanta have fans that are like, "if they win, we will come". If you're losing, there are plenty other things people in Atlanta and Miami can do their money. USF is experiencing attendance issues as well.

USC and UCLA have been competing for what, a 100 years? More? FAU and FIU haven't been in existence until mid 1960s.

Do Florida school play mostly in the daytime? If so, could this be a reason fans don't go? It might be nice in Florida with its sunny skies but to watch a game in the hot sun for 3 hours doesn't interest me or any other fan. Remember that you're not UT-austin and have all those bandwagon fans who think it's some kind of ritual to be in a game regardless of how hot it is.

Honestly, I watch every UTEP game but ours are at night. I would not subject myself to miserable conditions for ANY football game in the hot sun.

1st for FAU the south Florida thing doesn't really apply anyone who lives down here understand Boca to West Palm is its own world I will never let that be an excuse for FAU.
2. FAU has only had undergrad since 1988 it take time to build a fan base I will this though we despite the numbers we are way ahead of FIU when I come to supports our students are supporting more and more every year. The Attdencr number we have been listing have not been butts in the seats then tack on 3k or 10k like FIU does. FAU has a real solid base of fans it's not where your schools might be some of you guys have been playing football for 100 years. I don't worry about our fan base because I saw where it was just 6 years ago compared to where it is now. You can't walk into many places in East Boca now where you dknt see FAU stuff on the walls. The growth for FAU is definitely steady.
Watch the game this week we will have eqal or more then the 4k FIU fans.

RE: So I guess people will stop making fun of the Florida schools for being in conference
I know some UTSA fans who share olliebaba's sentiment about sitting in the Texas heat. Speaking only for myself, I just don't understand that though. We're talking about 6 days out of a calendar year. It's not asking a lot to endure sun and heat for 3-4 hours to give our team support when they're busting their asses out there in that same heat. People are too damn fickle nowadays about wanting everything to be perfect before they'll go out and support their team.

I lump the fickle fans in with all the rules changes to football that we see nowadays as the pussification of the sport. If you're elderly, or have medical conditions or something, that's one thing. But damn, our boys practice in this **** DAILY, as does any high school and middle school player. It's not asking too much of us to sit there in our seats and cheer 'em on while they're busting each other up on the field in that same heat.

Too hot... Too cold... This is football, not ******* Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Show Up!!

I'll disagree with you there. Palm Beach County is every bit South Florida. Do you really think that "Boca Bitches" are any different from "Aventura Bitches" or that Riviera Beach is any different from Liberty City? Even the demographics are similar. The same snowbirds (aren't they early this year or what?), same beach bodies, same mall rats. Corbon copy.

I've lived in South Florida for 23 years, almost half that time - in Palm Beach County (got BS in 1996 and MS in 2000 from FAU in that time)

+1 regarding your UM comments. It sucks having to drive a half hour just to play a football game. Not much we can do though since the morons in the county govt knocked down the Orange Bowl. Sun Life actually won't be losing 10k seats (pretty sure) but instead moving them around a lot. Every seat will be replaced and no more horribly miscolored sections. A major thing for Miami fans especially for the afternoon games is the sun, so they're putting up a giant canopy thing which will look really cool.

That should help the attendance issues some. I can say from experience Miami is better off now than we were two years ago - announced would be 36k and we'd have maybe half that in the stands. Now announced and actual are pretty much aligned (even if they're not all sitting down... darned Miami partiers!! haha). I bet it could have something to do with the economic downturn slowing.

Maybe FIU and FAU could play the game in SLS once in a while after renovations finish?
