I spent a week down in the Ft. Lauderdale area a couple of years ago, and the only "Southern" accent I heard the entire week was from our other fans who made the treck.

Didn't hear much English (Northern, Southern, et al) at Disney World. I won't be going back there for a looong time, if ever.

Once you're South of Tampa, you're in the North.

I think that dividing line is actually around Ft. Pierce.

As they say in the very metropolitan, very Yankee South Florida, "the farther North you go the farther South you get" :)

Yep. I love being a Southerner down here - people give you funny looks sometimes when they hear that nice ol' drawl.

In Miami you can get funny looks just for speaking English.
KajunRaider, where was that player from?
I was originally from Clewiston and we played Arcadia practically every year in football.
As someone posted, the uninitiated think of Florida as only Mickey mouse and the beaches, but it is #1 in citrus, #1 in sugarcane, #1 in nursery horticulture, top five in vegetables and surprisingly top 5 in cattle. It is a great place to live if you can get away from the tourists, Yankee and otherwise.

I looked back, and he is not from Central inland Florida (like I thought). He is from Crestview, north of Pensacola (so basically Alabama).

I think USC and UCLA do struggle somewhat (while taking into account they are overall bigger programs). USC had a year a couple years ago against all AQ teams if I remember right. They play a lot more home and homes than others were because they needed better names to sell out (in contrast to a Texas, Ohio State, or Alabama who would probably have an extra home game, but one less compelling match-up).

Actually, Alabama is North Florida (or more accurately West Florida) at least up to the 32nd parallel. And one day, we'll take it back 03-old

In Little Havana, maybe. Rest of Miami is very metropolitan. While Native English speakers are a minority, Spanish speakers may or may not be a majority. Portuguese, Russian, Hebrew, Creole, etc., are freely spoken all over Miami. Heck, I am not a native English-speaker myself but not a Spanish speaker either.

I would not doubt that the Broward/Dade area becomes the largest home for Russians in the U.S. within a few years. People do not realize how many are coming in. Not to mention all the French Canadians, Muslims, and Europeans moving to south Florida. But, Clewiston, Imokalee, Moore Haven, and other Lake Okeechobee area towns have a sizable hispanic population (mainly Central American).

It took me a good 5 minutes to order from KFC in miami once because the only english speaking person was the manager (who eventually had to come out to take my order) and they seemed like i was the one out ofnplace.... and i was. Its a problem when there are so many here illegaly that you cant even order food because they cant understand or speak english. That being said, ill never go to miami again.

I cannot understand how that happened to you. You must have been in the most ghetto Little Havana or Hialeah KFC you could find. Plus, how hard is it to order if all you're saying is food stuffs? I order in Spanish here all the time with my basic speaking skills and I'm fine. Before I learned it was fine too since there's always English speakers too.

Just a couple of weeks ago, a buddy of mine was down in Miami on a business trip.

He went back to the hotel after a conference, and stopped by several convenience stores in the area to buy some smokeless tobacco (snuff, dip).

None of them could understand what he was talking about. Two of them brought out pipe tobacco.

Said he finally found some at $6 a can--- got back to the hotel and the stuff was dry as a rock (must've sat there for a couple of years unsold). 03-lmfao

You come to Miami to buy the cigars, not the dip. In a big city there's not that many places to spit (unless you're on the ball field). You can always buy the dips at convenience stores though (I used to dip all the time, skoal, back in my ball playing days; a lot of people still do around here, but not in the city centers, out in the SW of town where the spaces open up).

There are so many pieces to this overall puzzle.

There is the G5 startup angle vs. established 65 to 100 year old program. FIU and FAU have not been playing 20 years yet. That means that there are no kids at those schools going to games whose parents went to games. Generational tradition is huge but it takes time to build.

Then there is the South Florida big city angle which you could call the southern big city angle as most schools in big cities in the South experience it. South Florida has way too many entertainment options. Disaffected kids at historically commuter schools simply aren't going care that much about playing some G5 school. Georgia Tech and Miami struggle with attendance. So of course G5 schools that dont have that history will. I laugh at the having to have a country-fied accent to watch football. High School football is huge down there and a majority of those kids parents and grandparents in the stands have West Indian, Haitian or Cuban accents. That isnt why the South Florida schools struggle with attendance. Miami plays 20 miles from campus and FAU and FIU dont have the history yet and frankly as bad as Miami's economy always is people find cheaper entertainment options. Atlanta struggles with this to a certain extent as well. Every weekend of the fall there is a different set of neighborhood festivals, massive concerts in parks and now its fair season in North Georgia mountains and Central Georgia. There is a reason GT is running a huge white out/ students get a storm trooper mask promotion tomorrow for the the Miami game.

You can find similar attendance issues in Houston and Dallas and Tampa and any huge city in the South if the school isnt on a consistent winning streak at home and if the fans do not find the opponents appealing.

LOL at illegals in Miami. Most of the immigrants in Miami are Cuban, Nicaraguan or Haitian and here quite legally.

Yep, sometimes you've just got to be satisfied that you have a team in the game. If Miami loses to Ga Tech, you'll be able to bowl in the aisles at SLS the rest of the year (except for the FSU game which brings its own level of craziness).

oh, no. The Miami economy is going to crumble without you and your purchasing power (you come to Miami to go to KFC? hahahahha). Whatever will we do?

Portuguese, Russian, Hebrew, Creole, etc., are freely spoken all over Miami. Heck, I am not a native English-speaker myself but not a Spanish speaker either.

I would not doubt that the Broward/Dade area becomes the largest home for Russians in the U.S. within a few years. People do not realize how many are coming in. Not to mention all the French Canadians, Muslims, and Europeans moving to south Florida. But, Clewiston, Imokalee, Moore Haven, and other Lake Okeechobee area towns have a sizable hispanic population (mainly Central American).

Yes, that area is altogether different from South Florida.

Yeah, I noticed that too. LOL. Cuban cafeterias, Nicaraguan fritanga, Argentine steakhouses and he dialed up KFC.

Several points:
When I used to visit Miami on business, I was downtown as I was there to visit law offices and CPA firms, overlooking the ocean (near the Intercontinental Hotel (not sure it is still there)) and the majority of the non-English speaking people on the street were Cuban, with other So American nationalities as well. I do not know what it is now as I have not visited in many years.
As far as the cities/towns mentioned, I am not sure the response of not being like the rest of So Florida is because of the lack of other nationalities or because there are too many other nationalities. Just for clarification: Clewiston - primarily southern with a sizable number of Cuban-Americans, plus others, Moore Haven - primarily southern fishermen and farmers, Immokalee - large numbers of Haitian and Mexican-Americans, Belle Glade and Pahokee are similar to Clewiston in that the majority of the non-English speaking residents are of Cuban descent.
The non-immigrant population of all of these towns is as southern as it gets... farmers, fisherman and ranchers.
Also I agree that the majority of the immigrant population in So Florida is legal. It is not as easy to swim from the Yucatan peninsula or Cuba as it is to cross the border in Texas, Arizona, NM or California.

That ignorance is out of left field for you. Miami is the hub of the Americas, there are people here from every country (North, South and Central America plus the Caribbean) and every State in the Country.

The port is the 'Cruise Capital of the World' and the intial stop out of the Panama Canal making it the 'Cargo Gateway of the Americas'. The airport is #2 in the Country for international travel (18.5 million passengers), #7 overall (42 million) and the #4 Cargo airport (1.8 million tonnes).

Miami is also ranked #29 in the Global City Index published by the Chicago Council on Global Affairs (Atlanta = 36, Houston = 38, Dallas = 50).

So your point of illegals is clearly overshadowed by the actual statistics of the City. Nice try though.
