World War I
Today marks the 100 year anniversary of the First World War. A war that still can be found on today's battlefields. It can be considered the first modern war. It saw machine guns, tanks, planes, and submarine warfare. It also introduced the world to chemical warfare. Men from Germany, France, Russia, Britain, Italy, Austria-Hungary, the Ottoman Empire, and the United States found themselves in its grasp. Millions perished, and whole empires collapsed. So today give moment of thought to those who fought and died on the battlefields. There is not an American veteran alive anymore to tell the horrors of the War to End all Wars.

Yep...That pic pretty much sums up 1914 on the German side...The Allies did not have helmets until 2 years later. They still were wearing cloth hats. Clashing of the old and new worlds. In the next month...a bloodbath ensues. All the military planners nightmares come true.

Around 9 million soldiers died and over 21 million wounded. The US had over 116,000 perish and 204,000 wounded. Never forget the sacrifices of our veterans.

This picture was actually taken in 1917. The lance was only featured because it was a posed photograph. Another reason you can tell it was posed is that the horse is not wearing a special gas mask it would be wearing where this taken in the field.

Plus the Stahlhelm makes it post-1916 as well, before then it would be the Picklehuber. Also, they quickly got rid of their lances in 1914.

Good eye.
Do you know of any actual instances of them going into combat with the lances in the earlier stages of the war? I would be interested to hear details on that. The book I saw this picture in didn't have much information on it

All this stuff is surreal in nature. The fact that the French had cloth hats and colored uniforms in the beginning is crazy. Shells exploding all around and No helmets?...Really?

19th century tactics, 20th century weapons. A big factor in the crazy casualty numbers.

Tactics of the day, especially French tactics of the day emphasized attack. If was felt that things like helmets and body armor would slow the infantry soldier down too much.
It took them a while to figure things out the new Rules of War.
Both sides were still looking for the "breakthrough" of the lines, even in 1918, that they could finally pour their cavalry through to get the final overwhelming victory. With machine guns eliminate cavalry as a "breakthrough" weapon, this war moved at the pace of the foot soldiers' feet, even when they did break through the trenches.
Germany came very near to achieving the "Lightning Victory" of the Schlieffen Plan in August of 1914. It was only when French troops stopped them on the Marne River with massed machine gun defenses that the German advance was halted.
How did those troops get to the Marne? Mechanized warfare!
Every taxis is Paris was used to move those troops to the river.
Who remembered the lesson of the Marne a month later? Not 1 single general.
