RE: OT: World Cup Thursday - Who you got?
Mexico beats Cameroon 1-0. Couple bad calls in the game. Mexico had two goals disallowed. One for offsides and the replay showed he has onside. Cameroon should have been awarded a penalty for a handball in the box but it was missed. Absolute downpour during the game.

And once again Mexico can thank the US for being in the World Cup.

It put the MLS (the top soccer league in the U.S.) in 4th among males ages 15-25. Beating out the MLB (barely but still beat them). Only ones bigger were NFL, NBA, and college football. It may not become as big as the NFL in the USA, but it will definitely be a major player in the next 10 years.

What I find interesting is the median age of season ticket holders. The median MLS season ticket holder is just under age 30, easily the lowest age of the top sports. If those ticket holders don't find some other interest then even if the rate of new season ticket sales slows down, they are still likely to have significantly large fan bases in another 20 years because half their season ticket buying fan base will still be under age 50.

Unless something happens, half their fan base buying season tickets should be with them for another 30 years.

That's the real threat to the traditional big four, in the next decade or two they have to convert a lot of people who aren't season ticket holders into season ticket holders to replace the graying fan bases that they have.

Based on the demographic trends, the NBA has a shot to challenge the NFL for dominance sometime around 2025-2030.

Among the team sports, MLB and CBB are the grayest of team sports as far as fan support goes.

Soccer's popularity in this country will be determined by how well we do at the international level. Right now we have a decent team that you actually believe has a chance to be a Cinderella team that could make it past the group of death. If the US Men's National Team fails to qualify for the world cup for the next 20 years the popularity in this country will be non-existent much like it was in the past, I just don't see us regressing to that point. Even if we are mediocre it is an improvement that people can get behind.

Spain was absolutely embarrassed. Now if they have any designs on the World Cup title, they are likely looking at having to beat Brazil in the round of 16.

Have heard that for many years. We are going to have to do well in this or other formats to see a big surge. Just not been consistent enough to keep the general interest up. Those that kind of follow it but only if they see some winning.

Don't believe enough people in the US, outside the influx of folks from South of the border, give a much of a hoot. The networks continue to try and ram this stuff down Americans throats, but most of the nation isn't buying it. It'll be interesting to see the ratings.

I can get into the World Cup a little. I do appreciate the incredible skills and athleticism. I have a theory why the majority of Americans just can't get into soccer. This is in no particular order.

1. Dramatic fake injuries to draw fouls
2. Stoppage time (I can't tell when the game is going to end)
3. Tied games
4. Not enough scoring
5. Too many other sports to follow in the U.S.

Anyone have any other reasons?

Who was the soccer player that was so great @ 30 years ago.
No really well known, to non soccer followers, players.
Believe in football, even people that didn't follow football knew who
Joe Montana was.
When they score in soccer, seems like half the time it's just dumb luck.
Probably no soccer fans will agree with what I just said but think it is true
looking at it from the outside.

PS - Pele, that's who it was.

Even non Americans will agree that #1 happens too much now. But things like tied games and stoppage time are just the way things are done.

Best way to tell when a game is going to end is to add 1 minute roughly to the end of the first half, and 4 minutes to the 2nd half. The time is added on to cover time lost due to injuries, goals, substitutions, etc.

Uhh...The last World cup Final was watched by 24 million Americans. World Cup makes an absolute killing in the ratings. Its the reason that Fox is spending so much cash to steal the rights from ESPN after this year.

Ratings say that Soccer will pass every sport except the NFL and College football within the next 10 years at the current rate.

Joe Montana was not and is not more known to non fans. Pele is likely among the top three most known athletes in history. Also the prime of Pele's career was nearly fifty years ago and his time playing in New York was nearly forty years ago.

http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/1994_FIFA_World_Cup

The 1994 World Cup was the best attended in history, with average attendance of nearly 69,000.[1][2] The total attendance of nearly 3.6 million for the final tournament remains the highest in World Cup history, despite the expansion of the competition from 24 to 32 teams (and from 52 to 64 matches) in the 1998 World Cup.[1]

If we hosted again, both records would be topped.

If we hosted again, both records would be shattered, obliterated, destroyed until the USA would host it again after that..

FIFY

For anybody that cares, I created a World Cup thread on the CUSA board with group standings and scores for each game. This way there can be discussions of games along with up to date group standings, a schedule of future matches, and live scores. All opinions are welcome!

Uhh.... How about providing a link to that info. While you're at it break that 2013 viewership is down into regular ESPN channels and the Spanish speaking channels. Then we'll see just how many "Americans" watched.

Sports Media Watch reported the opening match of the 2014 FIFA World Cup drew 9.5 million viewers. More than half, 5.1 million, watched on Univision. By comparison the first round of the NFL Draft drew 12.4 million.

The 2013 MSL final was the least watched in history on English speaking channels. According to this article it garnered about as many viewers as a "rerun of Everybody Loves Raymond." I've included a link below.

So far 12 WC matches have been played and 37 goals have been scored. With each match lasting 90 minutes that's 18 hours of "action". ONE GOAL ever half hour. Americans won't sit still long enough to watch something that boring.

No one is forcing anyone to watch soccer this summer. Hockey is on but I don't watch it nor discuss it.

This weekend a sports fan can watch the US Open, NBA finals, CWS, MLB, World Cup, lots of options.

I'll believe it when I see it. I was a little kid when Pele came to New York to play and bring soccer to America. The World Cup is on when there is not many sports going on in America. I'll watch it passively. Don't get offended. I don't like baseball which is a passion for many.
