What War Films Do You Consider A Must See?
So many choices worthy of selection both from the classic and modern eras. The Great Escape (1963) is one of the best older films IMO with Steve McQueen's classic motorcycle scene toward the end. Saving Private Ryan probably impacted me the most from the opening beach landing scenes that were all too real. The high quality acting, great story and intense action make this a must see film.

I agree with you on the quality of Saving Private Ryan. A lot of people are turn off by the improbability of the story (though if you know the history of USS The Sullivans it isn't that much of a stretch) and miss out on the great cinematography. I also like the Band of Brothers series.

I had considered putting Platoon on my list, but as good as it is, I don't consider it must see. I've only seen 3 of the 9 on your list (Platoon, Black Hawk Down & Glory). Also, seen bits & pieces of Midway.

I saw Midway in Sensurround… so it’s difficult to top that experience.
I like them all, from Spartacus and Catch-22 to The Incredible Mr. Limpet.

But I’ll put The Bridge On The River Kwai on the must see list.

TBH i think we are in a mini golden age of war movies. 4 of the ones on my list came from 2006-2013

I haven't seen either film, but is Letters from Iwo Jima a better film than Flags of our Fathers? It's what I heard when LFIJ came out.

Battle of the Bulge and The Dirty Dozen are must sees. Both films had Telly Savalas and he is a great war movie actor. I would also throw in Braveheart for the battle scenes and storylines.

without a doubt letters is the better movie. although flags has the best storyline that I have ever seen in a movie. and by far the best/most symbolic ending for a war movie that I have ever seen and the way they portrayed the deaths of several characters & the flag raising itself is quite astonishing.

the beef that most people seem to have with it is the story line is always bouncing around between iowa jima, the war bond drive, & 1984. it has no concise war scenes, and complicated inter-character relationships. letters is about an entire army that fought to the death (literally) and it is really hard to top a movie with those kind of plot points, especially if the movie in question (flags) involves opera parties & train rides for half the movie.

no. it is a german war movie, and one of the lesser known war movies even among war movie buffs.

It's a subtitled German film. It's really worth your time.

A couple I haven't seen listed that I really enjoyed, All Quiet on the Western Front (I think a remake is in the works) and Enemy at the Gate

Great story and, well, Rachel Weisz.
