RE: ADP: Firms Add 220,000 Jobs In April
I know how the damn rate is calculated - the calculation is not in question. We are all saying that that the stupid rate is meaningless if people are dropping out of the workforce four times as fast as jobs are being added.

That is unsustainable and it has been happening for 5 years now. If it keeps going we won't have an economy at all. And .1% growth? I mean seriously? 5 years in and we have .1% growth to economy? How can ANYONE call this a success?

Yep, everyday people start getting old and choose to retire...this isn't a new phenomenon.

The participation rate will probably drop more over the next several years as baby boomers retire. You all knew it was coming. Not that the current trend is all retirements; I'm sure many people are just giving up hope, staying home and drawing food stamps.

Response to what? You guys' complete inability to understand how the unemployment rate was and has been calculated?

Just saying it doesn't look right doesn't make it so. You need to understand the concepts at play to know what they're telling you. And clearly those posting on this thread don't.

Okay Tom, then how about enlightening all us great unwashed. What nuance are we too thick to understand? What about the U3 number are we missing? What U6 part are we screwing up?

What about the formula used to calculate the UE #'s is left out of the posts and comments in this thread. I'll be very curious to find out about these "concepts" that we're all missing but you have down pat.

Please, please do help educate all of us. This should be gooood.

Well, they are retiring at some point. But it's also true that under this clowncarcabal old people are being forced to work longer than EVER before.
Sure some is better health and wanting to keep active, engaged etc. But many are doing so out of necessity. Wal-Mart greeters? Has there ever been one under 80? Baggers at the local grocery, shelf stockers, hardware and the big box places etc. ALL have a sizable workforce of folks retired from their "real" job, but finding themselves having to work much longer than expected to pay the bills. Fact of life for many.

Quote:Private employers hired 220,000 more workers in April, the highest monthly total this year, payroll processor ADP reported Wednesday.

ADP's report raises optimism about Friday's closely-followed Labor Department report on April employment. Labor's figures include the public sector.

Economists had expected ADP to report 200,000 more jobs, according to the median forecast in Action Economics' survey. That survey's median forecast for Friday's report anticipates payroll gains of 210,000 jobs and a 6.6% unemployment rate, down from 6.7% in March.

March's private-sector job gains were revised up to 209,000, ADP said.

The last time the ADP survey showed back-to-back months of job gains in excess of 200,000 was October-December 2012.
ADP: Firms add 220,000 jobs in April

800,000 left the work force in April. So add 200,000 and lose 800,000. Even in leftist math isn't that a loss of 600,000 jobs?

Only a moron would celebrate these numbers. 800,000 out of the workforce and over 200 jobs claimed. We are all doomed.

Well now, according to Tom, you just don't understand these things.

I'm sure I'm not alone in waiting for this explanatory missive. Should be just fascinating.

The report clearly stated that these were privately created jobs. What did the government have to do with this?
