There are many reasons why an increasing number of people are classified as obese – and now racism could be one of them.

Frequent experiences of racism are associated with a higher risk of obesity among African American women, a new study claims.

Scientists found that women who were more frequently victimised for their race, were more likely to be obese.

The study, by Slone Epidemiology Centre at Boston University, found the relationship between racism and obesity was strongest among women who reported consistently high experience of racism over a 12 year period.

The research was based on the Black Women’s Health Study, which enrolled 59,000 African-American women in 1995 and has followed them since.

While rates of obesity in the U.S. have risen rapidly over the past few decades, the greatest increases have been seen in African American women, half of whom are currently classified as obese.

Obesity is a risk factor for numerous health conditions including cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes and orthopaedic problems.

Scientists said that racism is a form of psychosocial stress that African Americans experience disproportionately.

It is thought that experiences of racism contribute to obesity. Data suggests that chronic exposure to stress can result in dysregulation of important neuroendocrine functions, (interactions between the nervous and endocrine systems) which can influence the accumulation of excess body fat.

It's obvious. People eat when they are depressed. Suffering from racism would cause depression which in turn could lead to obesity.

No one is responsible for their condition.

How do these women know it is in fact racism that they are getting instead of fat stigma, reaction to their general sucking, or just the fact they may be a ****** person?

There are just a million reasons a person might catch **** from others, racism is just one of those.

The whole exercise is one of shady statistics, crappy questions, and a desire to be politically correct.

My take of the study is simply that these women like all other women can become obese because of a number of outside factors. Racism is simply another of those reasons. Since black people experience it more than non blacks, it is an additional risk.

That's so stupid... White people are victims of race crimes and get called racist all the time, dafuq dude...

Like LSU said, poverty is a better indicator. Poor people get treated like crap, poor people can't afford a higher quality of food, blacks tend to be poorer, black women are therefore fatter.

Racism may be a part of it but it's kind of silly to say the more obvious issues aren't the ones causing this more often than racism is.

Shows that the researchers, and the leftist posters here who say it often enough, don't understand that correlation isn't causation.

The key phrase is "...among women who reported consistently high experience of racism..." and the key word is highlighted.

Maybe the correct analysis of the research could be that fat people lie. (I'm being sarcastic so it isn't necessary to respond about how insensitive I am. But of course you can call me names if you wish.)
