Which would be more expensive? 2900 dollars or it falling on your house? Pay the man and save yourself a LOT of heartache.

Forgot about the firewood aspect. Good catch.
Fo, do you need a permit or city permission to chop down the tree? And is the tree guy you're thinking of using licensed and insured? If they don't have workers comp and one of the workers injures himself you can be responsible for his medical bills.

The only thing a Southern Yellow Pine is good for is lumber.
It's alright for a campfire, but no one burns that stuff in their fireplace.

Here it is $1,000 +/-. This time a year closer to $750. After a major storm much higher. Get another quote

Also will cost much more if you are having them grind the stump into the ground. The $1,000 standard leaves the stump.

Are they going to haul everything away, grind up the stump, and backfill the hole with dirt, etc? That may be a fair price since that is a rather large tree. I'd get a couple more quotes just to keep them honest.

Set it on fire before Steven Chou raises the gas prices any more... A penny saved is a penny earned, right?

BOOM!!!!! She just come down....Shook the house!!!
Got them to take it down for $1500. Evidently they were trying to hit a HR with me with the early estimate.
It is a kick in the arse to watch these cats do their thing.

I wonder how many critters lived in that tree and are now homeless. Why do you hate trees and critters?

Seems a bit high but not outrageous. Get another quote or two.

Ditto to that! When we had a freeze in El Paso two or three years ago. A few of my palm trees that were now about 10 feet tall froze. I decided to remove all of them as they tend to be a pain in the yahoo with trimming, shaving, etc. I took three out myself and realized it was a bigger job than I anticipated and had the other 7 removed by some folks that gave me a great deal.

Since it's not leaning towards your house, why would you cut a 90+/- foot Pine tree? That thing has got be a beautiful sight. I have some 60 and 70 foot Oaks on the very back of my property that are straight up, no bends or archs or anything, very beautiful...

I hated to do it but was on a ditch bank and one side was pretty much eroded away. It was leaning towards my neighbor home. He took out 2 that were leaning my way....I decided to be a good neighbor and remove the danger. I still have 6 on the back of the property that are the same size...over 100 feet. I would have loved to have been able to get it out in 20 lengths and take it too a saw mill..but..There is just no way to get machinery there. This one was 77 feet to the first limb. It would have made some fine lumber.

RE: Tree advice from anyone
my wife declared war on 4 pine trees (one of which was massive) in our yard a few years ago. earth day, ironically enough.
it was $600 per tree, and he sold the wood to a mill. he brought in a crane for three of them, but the one in the back had to be taken down in pieces.
$2900 for one tree is very close to robbery.

some people just hate pine trees. I married one of those people. she kept insisting that it would snap in a hurricane and damage the house -- and the three in the front were, in fact, east of the house, which is exactly where you don't want them to be if there is a hurricane in the neighborhood.
