Tree advice from anyone
Man just quoted me $2900 to remove a giant pine tree in my BY. Tree is about 100 ft high and at least 30" in diameter. Has to be taken down in pieces because of no room to drop it.

Anyone had experience with this? I just wonder if this is a fair price.

Hurricanes do it for free, and then the insurance company picks up the tab for damages.

Seems high to me, especially for one day's worth of work. But then again local regulations on licensing, permitting, insurance, and dumping could makes costs soar in your area.

It's hard to say for certain without know the company's approach, but if they're planning on a 4-man crew working the whole day then that price is very fair. In fact I'd be skeptical of anyone who wants to charge less.

I just watched them take down 2 like mine next door. It took them 7 hours to do it with a 6 man crew. They manually hauled the tree to the front also. Due to the recent ice storm our city will haul off any trees cut down for free if they are cut into less than 4 foot lengths. THIS is where I think he might be a tad high. He does not have to remove the tree. He just has to get it to the street. Whatca think?

I spent over $2000 for a +/- 60 foot oak, and then less than $500 for a 30 foot one by the same company.

It's all about time... and I suspect a 100ft pine will take a lot of time. They took my oak down in about 4' sections until the got to where they could 'fell' it.

Sounds kind of expensive... but it just depends on how many people they use and what kind of fees they have to pay for that sort of thing.

That is my fear. It is on a ditch bank and has a lean to it..although not at the house.. I has survived lots of storms..but..it makes me nervous. It would flatten my house if it fell on it.

Six years ago I had four pines removed from my back yard, it cost me $2,400
plus the $200 I gave my neighbor because of the bobcat damage to their lawn.

They had to navigate around a privacy fence and an in-ground pool too, so it wasn't an easy task.

Still think it's a good price.

Seems high to me. What region of NC do you live in? I can ask around a couple people that I know that have had trees taken down. I'm assuming NHC?

A buddy if mine rented a bucket truck for a day and it had a winch on it. He tied the rope to the top and just lopped it off in 5 foot sections. His tree wasn't a 100 foot tree though. More like 50. I'll look up how high a bucket truck can go.

Had a pine that size only 2 foot from my garage removed for $250. They removed everything, but they did no stump grinding.

It sounds in the ballpark, perhaps a tad high. I had an 80 foot Poplar taken down last year that was about 3 feet in diameter at the base of the trunk and it cost me only $1100. I had estimates from $1100 to $2000 for that one.

Columbus....These guys are from Lexington...a long way from home. Evidently they are working the area since the ice storm. The guy just knocked on my door looking for additional work since they had the job next door. Honestly...I watched them this afternoon and they have their schit together.

I had a friend with the DOT tell me just now that 2900 is about twice what the State would pay for a contracted job like mine. He is in charge of the NC Rest areas and has big trees cut down all the time. He is familiar with this tree and thinks he knows someone that would do it for around $1500. I think I am going to pass on this unless he comes down to at least $1700. I'll offer him that amount in the morning and leave it up to them. I am not under any pressure to do this right now anyway.

Thanks for everyone's input anyway.

Way to high. Get a phone book out and make some calls. If your tree is that big. Then it means it can be logged and cut up for next seasons firewood. I would not pay more that $1200.00 and that better damn well count stump grinding also.

It sounds a bit high for your part of NC. I would definitely go with hawghiggs's suggestion and get the phone book out. I would get a few quotes and make sure you are specific about what you want done.
