recruiting: commit/decommit
I noticed that rivals has removed one of the two verbal commitments that we had listed on there. they still list Cornell Urquhart, but took down the 2 star they had listed from Georgia. I believe his name was Macdonald, was listed as a qb. Anyone know why or know of a more active site tracking verbal commits etc?

I believe that he decided to go to Western Carolina shortly after Mickey was fired

RE: recruiting: commit/decommit
yeah the Macdonald kid decided he would rather be a Catamount with their winning tradition of football. THe kid we got from NJ (Nitolli ~ SP?) looks like a better prospect anyway.

thanks. I follow 247sports on twitter but did not realize that had that much customized info listed on every team like that- don't know how I missed it. I like how they have it laid out too.

Interesting to see where Withers is casting his net.
Also interesting to see Sage Harold ' s younger brother on the list. QB Churchie Harold. If nothing else he would be a great name.

If they can land Holland Jr it would be a coup.

RE: recruiting: commit/decommit
I would not be shocked to see a vastly different list of players sign in February than we would have if Mickey was retained. Our new staff has no connection to the players recruited by the old regime and Withers strikes me as a guy that wants to hit the ground running with his type of players. I would also expect that the Vad Lee transfer may turn some heads and make some guys who previously were out of our range take a second look at the Dukes.

Based on his twitter, it was not his choice.

Yeah its natural that there may be a few guys that this staff isn't sold on. I'm sure he'll land on his feet.

one of his tweets says #denied so I am assuming his grades didn't cut it.

I would think that too, but one of his other top targets he list is Dartmouth (along with W&M)....not sure what to think with that, then. Maybe he was denied early admission?

Is it possible that the new staff decided he wasn't a good fit for their system and decided to pull the scholarship offer? I can't imagine it's grades with the other schools he's considering.

RE: recruiting: commit/decommit
JMU coaches should not be recruiting the same players as Dartmouth and W&M. This is part of Matt's talent problems with this years recruiting class. He recruited basketball players that can perform at a high level in the classroom to prevent having academic problems. This is 180 degrees away from previously when he recruited basketball players that struggled in the classroom. There has to be a mid-point in the recruiting process. The players do not need to be Rhodes Scholars nor ones that end up on suspension. This probably takes more effort and homework in the recruiting process.

It is probable that coaches will offer scholarships to good students who they know will be special teams guys or non-impact players just to get the teams APR up. I imagine it is a delicate balance. APR presents a challenge to coaches who are expected to win and graduate their players especially at tougher academic schools. This is why schools like Vandy and Duke have struggled to compete through the years and probably why UR and W&M did not move up to 1A in 1980 when the division split.

That's exactly what those kids are for. As an example, look at the kids on end of any D1 bench in basketball (like the ones on every ACC bench who never take off their warmups and spend the whole game jumping around and over-reacting). You think any of those kids struggle in the classroom? They're told that if their grades slump, they're gone. They count on those kids to pull up the average.

ESPN has Holland, if I'm thinking of the wideout from Ashburn, listed as a 4-star recruit.
