To be fair, many (most?) were redshirts that didn't dress for the last game. Keeps you from doing something stupid and burning a redshirt in the last game of the season *cough* Joe Webb *cough*.
Joe Webb's redshirt year was not burned in the last game of the season. He was a redshirt in 2005 for the entire season. In 2006, Webb did not play until the next-to-last game of the season when he came in against Southern Miss when Sam Hunt was knocked silly. Webb then started the last game of the season at UCF. I don't know why it took him so long to play but that was his second year in the program.

It does make you think about this: Chandler, Owens, Sharp, and just about every coach on the staff (unless I missed someone going to L-ville) are all jobless because of McGee's decision. It's a reminder that while the college coaching career can be high-paying and glorious, it can also be a hard, cruel career, especially on the bottom end.

I thought Louisville might give Owens a shot, but they haven't yet. I feel sorry for those guys, but they will probably land on their feet somewhere.

RE: Coach Chandler......
There remains the possibility that the "new coach" will keep a couple of position coaches in order to maintain recruiting momentum towards 2/5/14, as did McGee with one. When do their contracts (and pay) end? Since most are already gone (fired or moved on to new jobs), the two remaining could be considered essential to the program for at least one year.

It's going to be tough for them. They were just grad assistants before UAB, not much ground work or credibility to pick up the pieces as quick as others. McGee abandoned those guys and their families if you ask me. I know it's a business but it should be handled with respect and integrity at least.

And walk-ons
Hell, as bad as that game went, why not suit up walk-ons and let them play?

You're right. I knew we'd wasted a year of his, but got the details wrong.

That's what has impressed me the most about these guys. They are the definition of "ass in the breeze" but still show up and man the guns.

They probably don't have a ton of other options at this point. If they don't do **** while we are without a coach, there is zero chance of them being retained. Showing up and doing your job(maybe even better than expected) at least gives you a chance of staying. It's a crappy position to be in no doubt, and these guys are probably sending their resumes out to everybody they know, but the only chance of survival right now is to show their worth now.

They could be working on their resumes and networking, looking for work. Instead, they're in there grinding and trying to hold things together. Yeah, it's their job, sure it is... but we've all known people whose jobs were done poorly once they got the word of impending layoffs or a plant closing.
I give them full credit for sticking to it.

Oh, I do too. Like I said, I'm sure they have made calls and sent their resumes everywhere they can think of. But having some minor chance of staying on the staff is better than knowing you will be immediately be canned and being left with no job without a doubt.

Yep, and when someone down the line calls someone like Mackin to ask about one of these guys or even if it comes in a casual conversation, they don't need Mackin to say these guys quit on us back in 2014. Instead, they want Mackin to say the opposite, so they carry a reputation of being hard workers that care about the school and the kids.
I was recruited to UAB by Hilyer's lame duck staff in Dec. 1994, and I'll always appreciate them for talking to me and working to sign me, even though there was little chance they would be retained (and they weren't).

It is very hard sometimes to commit to a university not knowing who your coaches may be, especially if different coaches recruited you.
Depending on who is selected, there is a small possibility that some may be retained.
We all know how it works though.
