I take night classes at UNO and was a big fan of their basketball team when Tim Floyd was coach. I remember sneaking a radio into school to listen to them play Kansas in the NCAA Tournament. UNO starts football in FCS in 2015 (I think). They were in the Sun Belt when it was a good basketball conference (as opposed to a bad football conference). My recollection is that they left the conference by mutual agreement because they didn't want to build a decent arena. This is ironic, since they built a very nice,10,000 seat arena just a few years later.
My silent hope is that UNO football will catch fire and eventually turn into a decent FBS program that wins more than 1/24. It's not likely, though, with the Purple Monster nearby and Tulane reinvigorated.

Just proof yet again you can't take any opponent for granted. Have to show up ready to ball every game.

UTEP fans: Do you think this was just a bump in the road or was it a sign of problems throughout the year? A loss like this could go either way.

I'm pretty shocked by this. UTEP beats a good Tennessee team and plays Kansas tough, but loses to UNO at home after a week off? I'm wondering if Tim Floyd has lost this team.

I have a feeling UTEP will use this game as a springboard and be much better from now on. I have known Tim since he grew up here in Hattiesburg and he will make chicken salad out of this chicken$&@$

It happens. Teams always rusty after a week off and probably took UNO for granted. Bet they won't do that again.

But, as a conference, we can't afford these slip ups. UTEP was supposed to be one of the better teams in the conference this season. Good teams do not lose to winless teams this far into the season. Our conference RPI is already horrible, and this loss is not going to help any of us.

Good question. UTEP has played very well one night only to turn around and stink the next.
My opinion is that Floyd needs to adjust his punishment methods. He benched 2 starters for this entire game. That does not put your team in a very good position to win so he ends up punishing the entire team. A better approach, in my mind, would be to take away the start and some minutes but then just make them play their butts off whent they do go in.

I agree, but Charlotte has lost to friggin' College of Charleston and a terrible Davidson team. Crap happens.

Man, as a UAB fan, I could always count on the Miners for an epic game. I hope they can get it together.

They could lose every other conference game, but it's almost guaranteed ours will go to OT.

Agreed, but at least Charlotte has some good to offset the bad. I'm not sure what Tennessee will be this year, but UTEP doesn't have many other opportunities. I know they have played a solid schedule, but they really haven't done anything with it. I hope they bounce back, but that is a terrible loss, there's no way around it.

What the heck was wrong with the UNO Lakefront Arena? Too old? Sheesh, I remember when it was built. Seemed fine to me. Saw Dr. John there once.
Did it get destroyed in Katrina?

Lakefront was heavily damaged during Katrina, a long with much of the rest of their campus. They dropped to D3 and rebuilt, including a renovation of Lakefront making it an exceptional facility from what I am told. I will see it for my self at the SBC tourney.

RE: UTEP 36 New Orleans 34 Halftime
After further research I now see that UNO never made it to D3. I'm not sure what all happened but they were set to move to d3 and all of this was brought on by Katrina. Don't know why they never made it. I think there iis a UNO poster on these boards somewhere.

What kind of like your old administration who only benched your senior star player for one game after he punched his freshman team mate at practice Stephan Jackson and broke his jaw? He had to have surgery and miss about 2 months I believe, and I know the star player missed one game. That sounds fair.
I disagree and respect Floyd a lot more than your old coaches for not letting crap slide.

RE: UTEP 36 New Orleans 34 Halftime
too many wtf good games and too many wtf bad games. We got blown out by Iowa, lost at home to nmsu and now UNO. We beat Tennessee convincingly, beat csu convincingly and play Kansas to with in 4. I don't know what gives, but I just get this feeling that crosgile is having a lot of issues with his teammates, coaches and what sucks is that he is our only true PG. We're his 3rd school, he left st joes after 2 seasons and eastern washinton in the middle of last season. Floyd had already suspended him indefinitely before the season started.

Our losses were with injuries too, Ingram out at Charleston, Henry out vs. Davidson. Looks like those are behind us now. I know UTEP had guys sitting, but for disciplinary reasons. Things could just deteriorate even more if Floyd loses control of this team.
