Yet we get skewered over being a couple thousand under 30k?

If by a couple you mean five. No one is skewering you over your attendance numbers. It's the just excuses.

It's about 25k the last 5 years. This year was pretty much in line with about what you have done of late.

Yep that's an average of 26,201 over the last 5 years to be exact. It will be interesting to see what the next 5 years will be like now that the program is back on track. One would obviously expect those numbers to go up.

One thing I'm very happy about is that Marshall does not fudge their attendance numbers. What you see listed is what it is. We dont claim 20K and have 5K actual in the stands like some schools do.

UTSA(#2 in attendance) + F_U = ECU

Hmm. UTSA 29,214 + FIU 15,453 + FAU 14,552 = East Carolina 44,261

Your math skills leave a lot to be desired.

I think he's basically saying... UTSA plus take your pick of the F_U's and you basically have ECU's home average.

You are correct, and why can't the UTSA fans find any humor from an ECU fan. Laugh guys, I was just joking around and trying to be a stereotypical ECU fan.

I don't know what you are using but my caculator says 25,015 the last 5 years including this one, and lower than that the last 6 years.

Not sure if these numbers are accurate (49RFootballNow could probably give a clear answer), but just based on the box scores, we had 15540 average over 6 home games:

16630
16598
16630
12222
16630
14534

16630 is a sellout for the current stadium and with I think 3 non-D1 teams, pretty good numbers.

No, 15,300 is a "official" sell-out. 16,630 is the MAX standing room only total.

I feel so sorry for Marshall now. First it was the championship game and now the league is hurting their chance at the attendance title. Try having a 2 win team and still finishing in the top 5 in attendance.

Hey, we resemble that remark.

Tech's first year in CUSA and the season couldn't end quick enough. That's a shame.

noon kickoffs do suck, but UTSA had to deal with an 11am kickoff this year. We also had home games vs teams with some of the smallest fan bases in CUSA.

It would have been a shame if UTSA had beaten Rice to win the west. They would have had to move the game to San Antonio even though Marshall had head-to-head because of that whopping 4K attendance lead for the Runners, and we all know that's more important than on the field performance,

We're ranked 29th and 32 in the Coach's Poll and Harris Poll...

RE: Final Attendance Numbers (Season Average)
There are so many variables to talk smack about

- Players in NFL from your school
- Players on your team
- Your schemes/why you win
- Coaches and what they have done/are doing/their coaching tree
- Graduation/GPA
- Performance in all sports vs. just FB
- Recruiting/Future
- OOC performance for your team/schedule
- Your stats above/beyond scoreboard
- Recognition of your school in things above/beyond the game
- Why your kids are better role models and leaders than others
- etc., etc.

What continues to amaze me is how Herd fans are obsessed w/ this one attendance variable. It is a primary focal point and Herd are not even in the top 75 of FBS attendance and not even #1 or #2 in C-USA. They have one of the top offenses in all of College FB, they have an improved D, they have a legacy to be proud of, they have guys in the NFL, etc., etc. but for whatever reason, it is about butts-in-seats. See it on C-USA board, on Herd Nation, from their media, from their social media, etc., etc. Please turn down the volume. You are so worried about the C-USA 'brand' for this upcoming game b/c of Rice's attendance. Think about what it looks like to your brand when fans at one of the 75+ FBS schools with better attendance than you has to listen to you pound chest about 25K at the Joan. That hurts your credibility.

Lots more (and better) things for Herd fans to be proud about..

For Rice, of course you will never see us talk attendance smack. We know better. When pushed (like this week) we will remind people of our size and higher %'s of participation from people affiliated from the University compared to any other school now in C-USA, our #'s that do travel to bowl games, the unfortunate 'optics' of our stadium vs. people actually there, etc. but we prefer to focus our smack on GPA's, graduation, future leaders, kids not getting in trouble, etc. Increasingly, it has been nice to turn some focus to guys in NFL, recruiting, better stats in all of FBS, etc. but not yet mature enough to get too cocky here...so we have to tread lightly in this new territory for us.

Bottom line...focus your smack on what you are really good at.. Attendance figures of 25,023 does not qualify.

No- you are ranked NR, just like Rice. Those ranking end at 25. I know it's a complicated concept...

I agree that Marshall should be the host, but i found it funny how many times Rice's bad attendance was brought up by Marshall fans.

Well you had your best team in a long time and noon kickoffs or not, you would think attendance would spike somewhat. Isn't your avg over the past several years about 25k? And that includes some losing seasons.

After we lost to MTSU there was a sizable amount of upset fans. They showed their disapproval by not showing up to the UAB and So. Miss. games which already were going to be less attended because of the noon kickoff, and there wasn't another good team to get a win against until we played ECU last week which was the day after Thanksgiving with school out for the holiday. Not to mention I'm sure there were many women like my wife that went shopping over another noon kickoff on a Friday. I believe that had we hosted the championship it would have been a 30k+ with the unhappy fans happy again, the students back, and the shoppers not shopping.

I think the problem was that no one wanted to see you blow out a UAB or Southern Miss. Competitive games are what attract people. I don't think the Marshall fans were punishing the team.

Owl40 speaks truth, though. Marshall is coming off of a dominating performance against ECU and is a legitimately dangerous team. They're 5 point favorites on the road, against a team that hasn't lost a home game in over a year. Why are so many of Marshall's fans fixated on unrelated, irrelevant stats about the size of Rice's fanbase, or of our endowment, or of the city of Houston? None of that matters! What matters is that one of our two teams is going to leave the field with a big trophy and tickets to the Liberty Bowl, and most people seem to think that team will be Marshall.
