RE: Official 2013 NIT Season Tip-Off East Regional [Durham, NC] Thread
Coach K said he thought our best line up was the one we started tonight with White and one big in at a time, and that Stith was going to be really good. Interesting tidbits from the best college basketball coach of all time who scouted us.
I wonder which two teams we get next week, probably UNCA at home, not real sure of game two. I would guess Georgia State but we already play them. Maybe Elon but they are seeded higher and might get to host.

Good game for the Pirates. Sad we didn't pull it off but it's a huge step in the right direction. Always nice when a legend like coach K talks really nice about us. I know many of us believe in Lebo, but that's got to put a dent in some of the ACC non-believers attitudes.
Props to Lebo and the boys for a great freaking game.

I've never listened to Coach K postgame presser before now. How much is normal coachspeak for him, and how much is genuine towards East Carolina?

Well he is no Lou Holtz type of guy if that is what to are asking…Coach K has been one that will usually give credit where he thinks credit is due. He will praise another team or player when he thinks they played well. Hard to tell how sincere his comments were but they came across as genuine to me….

Whoa, whoa----aren't you the guy that always talks about how "1 game is not important---its all about the entire season"?-----oh thats right, you only do that when it fits your agenda .
As for CoC, was that game in Kresse Arena and did it COUNT?

and? That was one small part of a solid entire season of which they won 27 games. Still everyone knows it was still a fluke and Mizz was the better over season and team. See it's entirely possible to get upset and still have the better season and I didn't think that had to be said for that example. That's not the point anyway they are not 3 or 4 years removed from D2 like the UNCC guy was suggesting. It appears they haven't been D2 since 1996.

Yeah I would never take any coach completely at his word, but usually if K thinks Duke played bad he has no problem saying it. K seemed to really believe Duke didn't play a bad game, and I don't disagree with him. When you think about how a major upset gets pulled (or almost pulled off) in college basketball you would normally think the favorite shot the ball horribly from the field, from 3, from the line, and turned the ball over a bunch. Duke shot 47% from the field, 35% from 3, 77% from the line, and only had 10 turnovers. Also Duke's stars played like the stars they are, Hood scoring 32 and Parker scoring 21. Nothing about what Duke did screamed playing horrible. I think K was being pretty honest when he says Duke played pretty good and we just played that well to make it such a good game. We actually didn't do what I thought we'd have to do to stay in this game, just rain in 3's. We only made 5 for the entire game. I thought it would take 15-20 to even have a shot.

Bingo. Pretty much everyone that played for us had good games. It wasn't just like Akeem start raining shots. That's the most encouraging that seriously every player even the freshman and sophmore's looked as it was just another UNCG we were playing and un intimidtated even in Cameron.

Last season we almost beat the #8 team in the country, led to a pretty good season. But we also lost games we shouldn't have. While competing with Duke is definitely a good thing, I look at ECU's results this year and see two games against bad opponents Greensboro and Norfolk that we scarily close to being losses.
But I believe ECU showed that they are definitely among the competitors in CUSA this season and will likely finish higher than most pundits predicted.

I kind of agree with you on those close wins. I am hoping that it was just due ECU breaking in 4 new starters and having so many freshmen and sophomores. My gut tells me that ECU will be up and down (probably beat NC State, but then turn around and lose to Campbell (again)); but Lebo's teams usually play a lot better as the season goes on, so I think that it is a very positive sign to see ECU learning how to compete and win so early in the year.

USM barely beat WKU, UC Irving, and Georgia State OOC last year. I think Norfolk St and UNCG will be as good or in the range of any of those this year.

I tend to agree Shifty...I would not put a ton of stock into last nights game. Duke has not hit it's stride yet and we were unconscious from the line and stayed in the game. Still a good outing to build on..but..I expect we will have plenty of bumps in the road coming.

I would definitely put stock in that performance because that comeback against a very good opponent in a hostile environment was damn impressive, but I also wouldn't get ahead of myself because the league will have several solid teams who may beat up on each other, ECU included in that group obviously.

I am happy to see so many teams with a real shot at NCAA's this year. I count 8-10 teams in CUSA that could possibly win the CUSA tournment, but since the tournament is in EL Paso it is going to be rough.

I'm hopeful that out of those 8-10 teams, at least 2 can do well enough OOC that we get an at large. 1 team going from a 16 team conference would be shameful.

We get 3 teams play 2.
Here is what the NIT site says about the consolation....
The three highest seeded teams not advancing to the semifinals will host doubleheaders on Nov. 25 and 26. The matchups for the consolation games will be pre-determined and will not be based on wins/losses to ensure no rematches from the earlier rounds.
The 3 highest seeds not advancing would be
#4 Rutgers
#5 Rhode Island
#6 Elon
-----------------
#7 ECU
It's kind of BS if Rutgers gets to host again and we don't because they lost. I they don't let us host I bet we are @ Elon and playing them and the winner UNC-A and someone else. The someone else would be the tricky one. I just hope it's not another D2 school but we already play Georgia State.
So potential teams in the bracket at Elon or if we do get to host you would think could include regionally
Elon
ECU
UNCA
Georgia State
Rutgers
Stillman
Bum if it works out and we can't host or end up with Stillman. I'd rather go to Elon and play them and potentially miss Stillman all together. Our guys deserve more than getting stuck with another D2.
