Exactly what AttackCoog said months ago, when it started to look like the freeze-out was on. I actually drilled him for it, b/c our intent at the time was NOT to do that, of course. But reality finally dawned on Aresco and the presidents, so they did the best thing under the circumstances.

I now tend to agree that not having the champion assigned to any particular bowl might just be the best option too....I'm just worried about how the back up agreements work. Which conference has what back up with which bowl? Will the AAC be wide open to fill a good bowl if any P5 teams can't fill it? Will the AAC make a back up arrangement that effectively limits the freedom of picking the best available bowl out there if there are any P5 bowl shortages?

That's why I pointed out a few days ago that I thought it was interesting that the MW was serving as a backup to a pool of 8 bowls. I think the AAC would do well to copy that concept if possible.

Agree. Meanwhile, as I said above, worst case scenario is we put our champ in the Military Bowl vs. the ACC, but hopefully, we can snag a better backup.

But that bowl was written for a 3rd to 6th place AAC team. Is there any leeway to send the #1? If not, then while all the other bowls are filling up. Your #1 is on the sidelines waiting to if there is a better bowl that may not happen. That is the risk you are taking.
Then you may be looking at what happened to La Tech last year thinking they could get a better bowl.
But now I also forget that there is a bowl coalition going forward.

A higher pick can go to a bowl designated for a lower pick. Unless the selection is geographically unreasonable, no bowl is going to have a problem with getting a HIGHER pick than the one they are entitled to. There is no risk to the champ. There might be a bit of risk for the league's bottom bowl qualifier. However, with 76 bowl qualified teams required to fill the post season, I'm not sure there is any real risk at all anymore--especially if the AAC signs some backup agreeements.

Ok, Attack, you and I are starting to agree on everything. Not sure if that's a good sign or bad sign. 05-stirthepot

I guess the good news is the AAC appears to own the game and maybe in the next cycle it can get an opponent that doesn't suck.

Those of us who have lived in the west, or have gone to bowl games with PAC teams playing know that PAC fans don't travel well to bowls outside of California. A 6-6 Cal or Arizona St will bring no fans with them. West Coast fans will not travel to Florida for this bowl game. The whole idea is to make this bowl game as successful as possible right? Now if the AAC could land another P5 conference's #8,#9,#10 or #11 like the Big 10, SEC or ACC then it could work granted the teams are still available. Getting BYU in the rotation would be good as well.
No conference's #9 team is going to travel many fans to this game, unless that team hadn't been to a bowl in forever. The city of Miami needs to support it.
I'm still not understanding the lack of a Texas bowl or the cold shoulder to NOLA Bowl (when you'd get a sunbelt 1 or 2, better than C-USA 4 or 5, and maybe C-USA 1 or 2).

That said, I think a league-owned bowl in Miami is a smart idea. Lots of snowbirds, 2 Fla teams in the league, great winter location. And there is only 1 other bowl in Miami.
