OT: UT/VT to play at Bristol Motor Speedway 2016
http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/ncaaf-dr-s...ncaaf.html

While I think this is actually pretty cool, I'm pissed VT is going to be on of the teams involved. It will be the largest crowd to ever watch a college football game and will be added to the long list of things Hokies brag about other than the things that matter (beating notable teams, competing for a national championship, not choking, etc).

I had heard talks of doing that a while back, but thought they had stalled when Bristol built that huge tower in the infield. Can't imagine the sightlines will be very good. Still, like the Winter Classics in hockey, it'll be a cool novelty.

I'm from Bristol. This has been rumored since I was in high school. I will get tickets just to see it. I secretly hope that the field will somehow swallow both schools.

I believe that Uncle Ron's relatives used to own the racetrack.

The split city of Bristol has always intrigued me. This is a great idea!

This got me thinking about split cities in the country. I found this interesting paragraph.

"Divided Cities

 in the United States

The United States has two internationally 'shared' cities. Sault Ste. Marie in Michigan was separated from Sault Ste. Marie in Ontario in 1817 when the UK/US Boundary Commission finalized the procedure for dividing Michigan and Canada. El Paso del Norte was separated in two parts in 1848 as result of the Mexican-American War (Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo). The US modern city in Texas is known as El Paso and the Mexican one as Ciudad Juárez.

Within the United States there are also several examples of cross-border cities like Indiana's Union City and Ohio's Union City; Texarkana, found on the border of Texas and Texarkana, Arkansas;, and Bristol, Tennessee and Bristol, Virginia. There are also Kansas City, Kansas, and Kansas City, Missouri.

VT and UT? Could they possibly find more awful teams?

It's all about location. Bristol is almost exactly between both schools.

Yeah. Out of 120+ teams, there are probably about 60-70 worse than Tenn and 80-90 worse than VT....01-wingedeagle

The local farmers near Bristol better hide the cows, sheep, pigs, and goats that weekend. The most hilarious thing that could happen is that VT and UT could still suck and only 60,000 people show up

I think you underestimate the number of Tech fans (don't know many UT fans) that already make trips to Bristol for races and are going nuts over this. So many Tech fans are also NASCAR fans that this will be a huge draw. I would love for them to have a terrible attendance, but I have a feeling it'll easily break 100k even if neither team gets more than 6 wins/season between now and then.

Smart idea for both schools and it should sell out easily. I imagine many of the NOVA Hokies fans won't like it, but they've had plenty of games to attend at Fed Ex over the last decade.

Not to mention the novelty aspect of it. There are plenty of folks within a 100 mile radius that want to see a football game at a NASCAR track that this will sell fine. Like I said, I don't like either of these teams, but I'm sure I'll get tickets.

Better Idea: Play the game in the infield while the NASCAR race is going on under the lights... Now that's entertainment.

This is another in a long line of games between BCS schools at neutral sites. I was scrolling around fbschedules.com earlier and it's crazy how many big name matchups are scheduled between BCS teams OOC in the next 10 years. I don't think that bodes well for JMU if we do go FBS.

You took my post too seriously. I don't mean as far as awful football teams performance wise, I mean as far as teams that make you want to puke when you hear their name.
