I hate the Coliseum. It's like sitting in an old fashioned movie theatre.

Most old-fashioned movie theatres have better restroom facilities.

Looks like the closest seats will be at least twice as far from the field as the closest seats in a football stadium that has a track-and-field track around it.
Compare this photoshop vision of what the VT-Tenn game will look like with a photo of Kansas' football stadium.
I like how everyone on the field will be at least 12 feet tall like in the picture there.
Novelty aside, this would be a horrible game to try to watch from any angle in those stands.

Maybe they are comparing it to the Los Angeles Colesium prior to the addition of temp seats?
No, the LA Coliseum seats, even those that aren't really good seats, are much, much closer than the comparable seats at Bristol will be. Among other things, the track at the Coliseum took up much less room than the auto track at Bristol.
I was referring to the seats that are no longer used in the far endzone. Though admittedly the rest of the stadium was closer than I remembered

It is hard to imagine 160K fans and say 75K vehicles getting in and out of there. Anyone ever go to a NASCAR race there?

I have never been a friend of mine goes. They have sort of like camp grounds there so to speak where people stay. I don't recall him complaining about the traffic so it must not be that big of a deal.

NASCAR does it twice a year, and fills it up for the fall race...

And the price of concessions is about the same too.
I do think it is a terrific idea and will be great for publicity.
The only thing that may one day evolve that would make it more exciting is if they actually play the game using players in stock cars.

RE: Virginia Tech vs Tennessee at Bristol Motor Speedway in 2016
Bristol Motor Speedway is essentially located in a neighborhood. Traffic is an effing NIGHTMARE trying to get into and, especially, OUT of that place. Yet like a moth to a flame, I cannot wait to go back. It's a GREAT place to see just once in your life for the night race if you're into racing or, if you're just into great sports venues. Few things compare.
Having said all of that...playing a football game there is a TERRIBLE idea. I'm willing to bet dollars to donuts this is the first and last time this is tried. Bristol's parent company, Speedway Motorsports Inc. have been wanting this for a long time and they're about to find out why nobody jumped sooner. The sight lines, for a ball game there, are going to be TERRIBLE! I can't think of a way to create a less rocking atmosphere for what should be a fairly big game...unless of course, you were to play UK at Commonwealth Stadium.

Bristol is famous for CAMPING...as those NASCAR races don't bring in 75,000 cars...as tens of thousands are already there DAYS IN ADVANCE as they stay in RV's, campers, even tents for DAYS...which does help race day and probably Game Day traffic a bit.
Partying in the mountains for days is one of the main draws of Bristol...and will be for this game...as this event won't just be a 3 hour football game.

Partying in the mountains is cool, but both schools are already pretty much IN those mountains. Folks come to races at Bristol from all over the continent, while this should be a more local affair. I'd expect traffic to be much worse for the football game.
BTW, my friend who went to Tennessee said that during parties they'd throw all their empties on the lawn. By the morning, they would all gone - picked up for recycling by Appalachian hobos. Wonder if Bristol is the same way?

Why? It's right off I-40. So it's not like there isn't access...

40 doesn't come close to Bristol. You must be talking about 81.

Don't place that bet: it's been done before. See above in the thread.

It's not going to draw Night Race numbers of fans, so I don't think traffic should be too bad...but I just don't see this idea making it past this one game. As I've said, the sight lines are going to be terrible for football. The place was built to showcase racing and it does that well, but not to showcase whatever's going on in the infield.

Mental pause strikes again...
I know it's I-81 that goes through Bristol. But to get there from Knoxville, you have to take I-40 to get to I-81...
