How while back? Had to be after I left the state, cause I don't remember that one right off.. Heck, I remember when Gulfport used to have a theatre that would have advertisements for their XXX movies.. right on Hwy 49/25th avenue at one point (don't remember the name of it though, as I was a kid at the time.)
Quote:You probably heard nothing of the case of the murder of a Gay man leaving Joey's (a gay bar no longer in business - but I'm actually glad that the Gillich's don't run a bar 'serving' our community - if you know their history, you'd probably understand why) as well that was not investigated properly by the Harrison County authorities (and who also refused to consider hate crimes treatment).
Uhm.. yep, I did know about this one and in fact, it was because of the Gillich's "other industry" that got the gay man killed, it was not an 'anti-Gay' crime. (And yes, I believe the Harrison County authorities covered it up (I believe Leroy Hobbs was the sheriff at the time, and from the stories my dad said he heard (but wouldn't share) when he was a jailer for Harrison County, basically told me that Hobbs was the most "buyable" sheriff in history :) )
in fact, Tom, I used to work for one of the families that were close friends to people with the Gillich name. (not in that set of industry, but I found out they were involved sometime after I started working for their dad), and I know well about the Gililch "businesses' (it's amazing what "family" friends will tell you when they've had a few too many at 2 a.m in the morning, - nothing that would have gotten me killed, but enough to learn about the Gillich family.).
Quote:Gene Taylor, the worst excuse for a Democrat since George Wallace, was a Bay St Louisan.
WHY? Because he didnt' toe the line of the Democratic National Power brokers?
Quote:They're also small and have very few services for the community.
See, this is where you're losing the argument tom. You're wanting to FORCE the community to define what businesses work there. Let the market place decide what works.
Why should they HAVE to have outlets for the community?
But if the market decides otherwise, there were a couple of gay-oriented nightspots in Gulfport as well (that i remember from my time) that went under, not because of the city, but because NOBODY (not even the G&L community) wanted to go there. (of course, one of those locations had about 5 bar attempts that all failed, and in another the old Cadillac Cafe also bombed later.) Gulfport wouldn't let the business open elsewhere because they were trying to rebuild in that area instead of allowing for more sprawl.)
If they're BLOCKING the business (as I stated in the other thread) for discriminatory reasons (again, prove it's discriminatory, and not because it's a dangerous area.), then I'll agree with you 100%. For instance, right before I left the state (or it was on my first trip back down after moving), Moss Point shot down a strip club idea, the owners kept trying to say it was discriminatory (dont' remember if they were claiming racial discrimination or something else?), Moss Point pointed out: "There's an elementary school 1 block away from where you want to build!" (Guess who won the argument.. and it wasn't the owners).
But if you're just mad that not enough G&L friendly business are open, then go start one.. You obviously think there's a market for it.
As for the Moss point school, I will admit, the SPLC is NOT high on my list of recommended sources of listening to who is and who isn't tolerant (SPLC is as intolerant to certain groups as they claim their targets are), so I'll take that with a grain of salt.
You and I will have to disagree regarding the SPLC. Here's a news flash. They make money when they win lawsuits (as the loser usually has to pay their legal costs, especially if they win against a state entity on a civil liberties case). As far as their labeling of groups as 'hate groups', you are welcome to let me know which group named by SPLC as a hate group is mislabeled and I can give you ample reason to show cause as to why they were included in that list (the FRC and AFA are included with justifiable cause, but not all groups opposed to marriage equality are on the list).
My point about Gene Taylor was to show that on the Coast, even the Democrats aren't considered to be Gay supportive (or in Taylor's case - even Gay neutral - Taylor is gone and as far as I'm concerned - good riddance). My point about the lack of services is to show that the Coast might not be as great as you think. The problem with the Coast is the LGBT population just leaves town pretty much as soon as they can. If you go to the one bar on the Coast you'll see a largish population of persons under the age of 25, and then a huge gap in the age group until you see people in their 40's. Where are the rest? Gone somewhere else. People from there leave, and if they move there from somewhere else, they generally don't stay.
As far as opening a bar, after seeing how the authorities treat LGBT persons in Mississippi who try to open one, I'd think long and hard before I spent any time and effort doing so.
If I had to live in Miss, I'd probably choose the Coast, but that doesn't mean that things are great there. Its just marginally better there than elsewhere in the state.
