It was a website where you could hook up with a drug dealer near you. How stupid would you have to be to advertise your illegal drug business on the internet?

About as stupid as other criminals that also post their assaults, robberies, etc. online. Or those criminals who brag online about their exploits.

Incorrect.
Silk Roads was a website that operated exclusively on TOR (The Onion Router), a proxy forwarding system designed by the EFF (Electronic Frontier Foundation). To oversimplify ... you make a request into TOR, and it is then passed along randomly through several nodes in multiple countries -- in particular countries with strong civil liberty courts like Sweden and Germany and Switzerland -- and then it pops out onto the internet and fulfills your request. Due to the way requests are routed, no node in the daisy chain has any knowledge of where the traffic originated or is ultimately destined for. The exit node knows the destination and nothing else. Within this network, sites and services that exist ONLY within tor exist. On such place was Silk Road, a web site where you can purchase illegal drugs and they would actually get shipped to your door. All transactions were handled in bitcoin to keep purchaser and distributor anonymous.
People who think they can censor the internet are staggeringly ignorant. The genie is out of the bottle. The internet treats censorship like damage and routes around it.

And btw, this guy was found out because there is a version of Firefox distributed with TOR built in. The FBI used a zero-day exploit in Firefox's javascript engine to reveal IP addresses within the TOR network. The FBI was able to establish their own nodes within the network and use the exploit to find details of people using the TOR bundled version of Firefox.

GTS yeah it is really quite amazing. I got on there a few times but never bought. You could hire hit men, dog nappers, buy #4 heroin, buy auto glock slide conversions, hook up with weapons smugglers, buy hacking software, hire internet bullies, etc... It is only a matter of time before V2.0 starts up imo. The guy was a bad ass in my books. But I will say being able to buy heroin and meth to your door is a bad thing with a high social cost.

I am way down the computer rabbit hole. If you aren't using Linux exclusively, you haven't even entered Wonderland yet, Alice.

Well, it was still a website to buy illegal drugs. Ths bitcoin thing is neat but highly succeptable to money laundering, etc. I think it will eventually be a companion to the dollar for electrong commerce, but it will be regulated.
Anyway, for as smart as that Silk Road dude was, he sure was dumb to use his real name and address to communicate with people.

RE: Freedom Report: Black Market web site Silk Roads seized by government
I posted an article about Bitcoins a couple of months ago. It intrigues me from a curiousity standpoint just to see if I could make money off of it. When I posted that article Bitcoins were 1 for 89 dollars. Now it's 1 for 112 dollars. It was said this guy was caught with 26,000 Bitcoins. Does that mean they were in his computer. You can't physically carrry these can you. Can you put them on a zip disk and transport them. Inquiring minds want to know.

wow, almost 3 mil in monopoly money. Until you can buy more than drugs, hookers and hitmen with bitcoins I'll continue to write it off.

Bitcoins are purely digital so in a sense, yes, they are in the interweb but not necessairly in his computer. Maybe folks have some sort of receipt or statement, similary to a bank statement, that they can use to show others how many bitcoins they own. BTW, bitcoins are just as exposed to market fluctuations as the dollar. Check the graph below to see how the govt raid affected the price yesterday.

Silk Roads had been up for years. It wasn't until the Firefox exploit -- used a few months ago -- that they were able to get concrete information to start to go after them.

Governments will never be able to stop the laws of supply and demand. Where there is demand, there is a black market to supply it.
and ever increasing amounts of money to fuel it. Can anyone still possibly be for the The War on Drugs? We lost it 2 decades ago.
