Where are the tablets from Mt. Sinai or the Dead Sea Scrolls that mandate that all schools have to play football in a conference?
They are in a vault hidden under St. Peter's. Don't you watch the History Channel? The Vatican is hiding all sorts of stuff.

Simmah down. He was comparing 2 schools. He wasn't slamming the SEC. Below is a list of the P5 schools who sponsor less than 20 sports. Notice the SEC ranks pretty high on the list of having schools that sponsor a bunch of sports:
SEC 3/14
Miss St
Ole Miss
Vandy
Big 12 7/10
Baylor
West Virginia
Iowa St
Kansas
Okla St
Texas Tech
Kansas St
Pac 12 6/12
Washington
Oregon
Utah
Colorado
Oregon St
Wash St
ACC 6/14
Clemson
Pitt
Syracuse
Miami
Wake Forest
Georgia Tech
Big 10 1/14
Northwestern
Thanks for the quick data. The agenda I referred to was the potential loss of independence. If there are no sweeping changes that doesn't even come into question. If there is an upper tier with 4 or 5 conferences then independence could become an issue.
I did take the reference to the number of sports offered as a bit of a dig, but not as the agenda.
theres no way thats correct for the sec/b12 unless somewhere along the lines track & field/swimming got miscounted (some conferences count them differently)
Track and field counts as two sports per the NCAA since it awards a national championship to both indoor and outdoor squads/seasons. Most schools participate in track and field so even though it's counted twice, it's basically counted twice for everyone and shouldn't affect the averages too much. (Unless you're WVU, who doesn't seem to participate in hardly anything.)
Weird that swimming and diving (both men and women) as well as men's tennis appear fairly taboo in the Big 12.

The first one by dbackjon was kinda, sorta partially funny.
The second one by you, Sea Blue, was kinda, sorta just dumb and not really funny.
Here is my kinda, sorta just dumb one:
Is there a buried half jersey anywhere in Ann Arbor for the only 1/2 championship Michigan football has won since 1948?

The second one had sort of a "not really there" thing going that I thought was funny while I was still laughing at the first anyway.

For the record, a rather offensive a post was deleted (not mine).
As for mine... I'll try to stay away from all things Notre Dame.

Cool. Half of my material is ND-related. Don't know what I would do without it.
Friends of mine were married in the Basilica and my wife has been in a bridesmaid there once or twice. Parts of ND aren't so bad.

Overall, here are the conference averages:
1. Big 10 - 24
2. ACC - 23
3. SEC - 20
4. Pac 12 - 19.5
5. Big 12 - 18
So, the ACC schools with more than 20 sports have A LOT more than 20 to pull that average up to 23. Again, the Big 12 and Pac 12 bring up the rear.
Source.
Syracuse and Washington both sponsor Men's Rowing, the Original Intercollegiate Sport, which is not being counted towards the 20 because it is not NCAA sponsored, but which would get them each to 20. It requires about the same number of scholarships than Men's Golf and Men's Tennis combined, which would count if SU sponsored them and which help to drive up the sport sponsorship counts of others.

True, and in fairness to some of the Big 12 schools' numbers they offer equestrian and rodeo which are not counted by the NCAA either. Auburn took the title in equestrian this year.

RE: Wolken: ND's Swarbrick on NCAA Governance changes
for the last 3 days ive been trying to make a a sports fielded per school list but im officially throwing in the towel and waving the white flag because it is impossible. there were just too many grey area's and different standards among schools/conferences to deal with.
i have seen a lot of people post their own number for certain teams.....but imma just go ahead and say they are all wrong because they are all wrong because it is 90% how you interpret what counts as a team or sport.

Shouldn't be grey areas - NCAA is pretty specific.
Try this link:

Columns are sortable by conference, etc

for the purposes of this argument its not.
there are a lot of grey area's that makes it pretty hard. in fact look at your own link. sure you have no problems with baseball. but check out sports like skiing fencing & rifle and you will know exactly what im talking about.
i tried the "well only count sports by ncaa championships awarded in said sport" and that turned into a disaster. rifle is co ed meaning they can field 3 different teams and compete against each other for a trophy. skiing/fencing is defined as co ed as well but they compete mens/womens separately but their point totals are combined for a single ncaa trophy. some teams compete in swimming, some diving, some both, but the ncaa awards only a swimming & diving trophy.
theres just too many differences between the sports.
