RE: 2014 Basketball Recruits
The staff has been here less than 5 months and has landed or got commitments from 3 players.

This staff will rely on relationships and they take time to develop.

I thought one of the main reasons that Jones (and Stith) was such a smart hire is because he (and Stith) already have these relationships. That was the argument back in April anyway (for Jones).

And they already have a commitment from relationships. You think AC kid would come play on a BT team. That was Stith 1st get and he couldn't recruit till he was cleared by the NCAA.

This staff had previous relationships already established. They need to show during this early signing period they can compete for 3* recruits.

If not.....what?

No matter how you feel about the coaching hire absolutely nothing is going to change in regards to job status for at minimum 4 years (and even that might be soon). Coach Jones and staff are going to get time.

Also, when did the expectation become that ODU has to land 3 star recruits. Serious question, how many 3 star recruits did Blaine land? 1?

Isn't it safe to think with a change to an FBS league we should expect higher rated recruits? We certainly do in football.

I've said this before, but I think it bears repeating here. Recruiting In football and basketball is an apples to oranges comparison. With the number of scholarships available on a football roster, and the fact that more than twice as many schools compete at tha D1 level of basketball than do at 1A football it is just natural that a FBS program will have it's share of three star recruits when compared to basketball. I do agree however, that ODU should and will start pulling in some three star recruits soon.

What does moving to a FBS league have to do with basketball recruiting? Of course moving from FCS to FBS should improve football recruits. But looking at CUSA versus the former CAA (when the trivalry was still intact) I'm not sure CUSA basketball is as good as the CAA was before everyone left. Only 3 teams in CUSA have an all-time winning % above .600 (WKU, UAB & ODU) and only 5 teams have made the NCAA tournament more than 10 times (WKU, UTEP, UAB, Charlotte & ODU).

Could the new CUSA become better than the old CAA? sure, but I don't think it is starting that way.

First off....I have always been supportive of this hire with the premiss that JJ and this staff would deliver higher level recruits. The situation we are in now is specifically related to the previous staff's in ability to recruit the last 4 to 5 years. That has to change and our expectation is we should be competing for 3 and 4* recruits. If other mid major basketball programs can we should be able to as well. We have much more to offer than most others. It is time for this staff to show they are capable of recruiting at a higher level. This staff has about 1 month to deliver on the recruiting. If they don't, to me it will cast doubt on one of the main benefits of hiring JJ. Many programs are landing recruits now. We have yet to see anything for next year. I think many people are waiting to see what happens before they start speaking up.

This is very unrealistic. Basketball recruiting happens over the course of years, not months. So your doubts won't be grounded in reality.

I'll give JJ some credit. He seemed to be working very hard on Saturday at the Football Game. He brought Oleka and Freeman into SB Ballard Stadium and then they enjoyed a 76-19 beatdown together. Pretty sound strategy to get the transfer to host the impending JUCO transfer, if that's what they were doing.

Another random observation. JJ is always with Lamar Barrett, yet I never see JR or BS. I guess the other two are busy.

Probably has a much tighter relationship with Barrett due to coaching together at American. JJ might feel he would be better served by Barrett being his right-hand man, at least at this point.

I saw Coach Stith at the game on Saturday with (I'm assuming) his wife.

Jones, Richardson, and Barrett were tailgating together with all of us at East Carolina. I also chatted with Stith and his family at Maryland.
