Buckle up
That realignment pause? May be unpausing.

Big Ten expansion: It isn't done. That's about all I can say. Hint: The conference will begin negotiating on a new TV deal next year. The current contract expires in 2016. Definitely stay tuned.

With the ACC GOR, I'm a bit perplexed by where they might be headed...UCONN? Kansas? Is that GOR less than ironclad?

GOR just means the school hands its rights to the league for set term. The league has already sold those rights (ESPN for the ACC, ESPN and Fox for Big XII).

If the school leaves the penalty is you owe the league for any reduction in the value of the TV contract. If the contract doesn't drop in value, you owe nothing under the GOR.

ESPN's top tier rights with the Big 10 expire after 2016. If ESPN gets the new contract and Virginia goes to the Big 10, odds are ESPN doesn't reduce the rights fee to the ACC.

If Kansas or Texas goes and ESPN gets the Big 10 contract, chances are they don't reduce the Big XII contract.

Because they want those Big 10 rights, get those and they have all P5 league top tier rights.

If Kansas or Texas leaves would Fox reduce? Probably not, they own controlling interest in BTN. Adding them increases the value of BTN so it is worthwhile for Fox.

Only way GOR is a deterrent is if ESPN reduces the rights fee and that probably only happens if ESPN doesn't get the next TV deal with Big 10.

Thanks arkstfan, when the GORs were signed in the Big Ten and Big XII there were many who spoke like it meant realignment was coming to a stop for a while, if it had been explained like this back then, I would have hardly paid any mind at all to the GORs being signed.

RE: Buckle up
That sounds a lot like the deal that CUSA has. The teams that left have to pay to keep the media dispersal the same if the contract comes down. That was really effective. I think a bunch of message board fans need to stop talking about realignment. 90% have no clue and BS, 5% have some limited knowledge and think they know everything, and 5% actually contribute to the conversation in a positive way.

Depending on who goes away, I doubt it happens. Rice and USM are at the top of that list. If rice goes, grab TXST. USM, and I would take USA. Honestly Depending on how it is looking, CUSA might stand pat at 12.

Many current CUSA members would want to stay at 12 for the simple reason that they'd each get a larger share of the conference payout. Still, I think ULL and ASU would have a shot if former SBC members NT, FIU, MT, FAU, and WKU want them, but I have no idea where they stand on the issue.

I really don't see WKU wanting them. WKU is going to want more bball schools. Enter USA or some FCS call up. Like i said, completely depends on geography and what we lose.

Not to speak for other schools, but i feel former SBC schools will want good adds that are not from the belt. It adds newness and freshness to a conference that is already full of very familiar schools.

Yeah, you should definitely take the school from the Sunbelt then with the second most basketball championships behind WKU since it joined the Sun Belt and that sells the second most season tickets.

So you add USA . . . oh wait a second, it's not USA.

RE: Buckle up
I don't see how this could be a bad thing for the SBC.

The SBC losing Ark St, ULL, GaState and USA would allow the SBC to have room for NDSU, Montana, Montana St, Sac St, Portland St ect....a full western wing potentially.

The SBC could become the first coast-to-coast conference as envisioned by the BE and the MWC-CUSA merger. Invite 6 MAC schools for a Midwestern division and a mini-playoff.

The point of this thread is not to argue USA basketball vs, the Cajuns, but it looks to me like USA has 8 NCAA tournament appearances to the RC's 6 and has won the conference tournament 5 times since 1989 and I believe the Cajuns have won it 4 times since they joined, which was right around then.

Louisiana Lafayette joined the Sun Belt in 1991.

Since 1991:

Basketball
Regular Season Titles:
5 - USA
2 - Louisiana Lafayette

Conference Tournament Titles:
4 - USA
3 - Louisiana Lafayette

Just for fun let's do baseball too:

Regular Season Titles:
9 - USA
4 - Louisiana Lafayette

Conference Tournament Titles:
6 - USA
1 - Louisiana Lafayette

We've won the conference title on the floor five times. We have more post season appearances than you during that same time period. We also put more people in our building to watch us play. You can discount the seasons that Orien Greene played if you want. But, we all know who won the league.

I didn't bring up baseball, and I have a huge amount of respect for your baseball and basketball program for that matter. However, if you think you are far and away the second best basketball program in the league you are not correct.

would that be in 2004 and 2005? They are only listed as vacated.

No idea as to whether or not you guys get an invite, but I'll be surprised if you guys get to pull a MT/FAU and leave prior to a year's notice...

I didn't count 2004 and 2005 because it wasn't on the champion list I was looking at since the wins were vacated. If you count those vacated wins Louisiana won the regular season 3 times and the tournament 5 times. USA won the regular season 5 times and 4 times in the tournament.

According to the Sun Belt Media Guide since 1991 Louisiana has been to the NCAA Tournament 5 times (1992, 1994, 2000, 2004, 2005). USA has also been 5 times (1991, 1997, 1998, 2006, 2008). And two of our appearances weren't vacated.

Not possible. Remember, we now have a 12 month notice rule in place. Even if something incredibly off the wall happened so fast that it trickled down to this league, we would have to wait until at least 2015.

I think if I was you, I would just get comfortable in the Sun Belt, because I don't see us going anywhere.
