Turns out leftists like Nader may have been a big influence in spurring competition for Detroit.

This is what a well-written essay looks like. There's much content here as it spans the many facets of life that are all inter-connected.

This. Living in Raleigh/Durham I hear more yankee accents then I do Southern accents. I've lived my whole life in the south and most of the people I grew up with stayed in the south, however you sure do see a lot of people from the Northern states moving to the Carolina's, Georgia, Florida and Tennessee. I wonder why that is?

Warm weather? Check
Low cost of living? Check
Better looking women? Check

Meh, Typical Northerner stereotyping Southerners. The premise that states having a right to work law is sapping the Northern states is probably the most ludicrous statement I have ever heard. But then again this guy is a socialist and I wouldn't expect anything different from his ignorant ass.

FIFY.

Socialists hate competition, it destroys their mechanism for control.

All I see is bashing on the white southerner. How this guy brings in his altered history to prove his point that the Civil War was about slavery. Good luck finding that in actualy history books dated before the dawn of the PC era. Back when they had no reason to candy coat or walk on egg shells. Then they talk about "the eventual president carried just 10, 11, and 14 percent of the white vote in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana respectively,” Thompson writes. “An influential percentage of poor, uneducated, underserved, insurance-less white southerners..." Then he states the average income.

This guy must not realize that a vast majority of the poor, uneducated, underserved, and insuranceless people in the south are black. Nor does he realize that the cost of living is much lower.

I almost kind of feel sorry for Thompson, he contradicts himself throughout his entire article. Very typical of people like that.

I finally read the article and HOLY Crap... if this isn't satire, this is a whole MODICUM of stupidity for whomever this guy is and these arguments that he's agreeing with.

Quote: In fact, for both sides, an exciting by-product of separation would be an explosion of southern tourism.

HUH? Like Northerners don't go south anyway.. and southerners don't visit the big cities up north?

Quote:“With time, Americans would start thinking of the South as another Mexico, only with a more corrupt government.”

Chicago? Detroit? New YorK? Washington D.C.? Do we really want to start comparing northern and southern politiians?

Quote:“The South has operated like a competing nation in cannibalizing and degrading Michigan and the American auto industry.”

Oh noes!! The South has made industries work... and the northern states are failing to compete!!

Quote:… [A] union based on such a diametrically opposed approach to social organization—uncompromising Bible literalism versus protean secular law—is like a bad marriage that needs to end in order to save the children.

Sure... I'm pretty sure that those South Carolinians really needed a union to tell them how to live.. and then everything would be hunky dory and Boeing would have moved right in.

Quote:“All these gloom and doomers … whining about a world on the brink of extinction are descendants of the Lost Cause defeatism fostered and fetishized in post Civil War southern churches. …

HUH? What the hell does this even mean?

This is my favorite part:
Quote:According to a 2009 survey by Grand Valley State University, annual salaries for autoworkers in Alabama, Tennessee and South Carolina averaged about $55,400, while their counterparts in Michigan averaged $74,500

And the COST OF LIVING in Alabama, Tennessee ,and SC compared to Michigan is?????

Mr. Barra is a complete idiot in this article...

He makes a point that if the south were it's own separate country, you could then tax those cars as imports. It's hyperbole but interesting to ponder.

Let me know when a southern city the size of Detroit goes bankrupt.

JeffCo?

The alternet article started out w/ a ficticious premise, and went from there. It's nonsense, but w/ simple words so that imbizzle could understand it.

Here's another perspective

http://www.nationalreview.com/node/352546/print

The article addresses both of your points. This is a quote from Thompson's book, which is mostly garbage, but the line “The South has operated like a competing nation in cannibalizing and degrading Michigan and the American auto industry.” is so true. Northerners are tired of paying higher taxes to support their free-loading cousins. 03-lmfao

Thats just bull**** and you know it.

Yes. Hence, the emoticon I placed after the sentence. There is a small amount of truth in it.

Thompson didn't write this article. Allen Barra did, a southerner. He has some of the same problems that you do with Thompson.

Imbizzle is claiming "yes," b/c the south allowed auto manufacturers to sell cars at lower prices than those in Detroit. That ignores a whole lot of details that don't support the simple-minded thesis.

Who is "you"?

Does he forget that cuts both ways? Tariffs have been Detroit's big complaint about Asia for decades...now this guy says more tariffs will help?

There is a reason why logic used to be regarded highly as a fundamental element of education.

And if your Aunt Minnie had a mustache, she'd be your Uncle Fred. My point is that most Americans prefer cheaper cars that don't suck.

Damn them all to hell.

Leftist like to complain that "right-wing nut jobs" unfairly call Obama a Communist.

What is a better definition of Communism, than Government setting pricing on cars? The Government runs the Unions (and vice versa), so you are essentially advocating Communism while trying to change the definition so the dirty word doesn't apply to you and yours.

That's the definition of the Oconomy ®. Lies, BS, and no jobs.

Probably. It is to their detriment though. The cars Toyota builds in the Confederate states are more poorly built than the same car in Japan. Wonder why that is?
