"AAC Not Copying ACC"
AAC Commissioner John Swifferd (nee: Mike Aresco) interviewed at new conference HQ in a dingy strip plaza from Greensboro, said the "AAC is not copying the ACC and hoping to create brand confusion" with the ACC. Mr. Swifferd further stated, "it was pure coincidence the conference's acronym is so similiar to the Atlantic Coast Conference. This is a non-story and has no merit."

Just call them the American like they're supposed to be called. Their fans are stupid trying to get it called the AAC.

And it is stupid this site has it listed as AAC on the drop down. it should be listed as the American, that's what that conference wants, and that is what they will be called in the press.

I care just enough to wonder aloud why this thread was even started in the first place.

I'm pretty sure that it would be a trademark violation if Aresco explicitly said that they were hoping to create brand confusion and piggy back off the ACC's goodwill, so they took a name substantially similar that they knew would inevitable lead to such confusion. I'm guessing that's a lot of why The American insists on being called The American, but then only does a half-hearted job of correcting people when everyone and their brother calls The American the AAC.
SIDE NOTE: Obviously a lot of people think that the AAC is similar to the ACC, but am I the only one who thinks that "The American" is at least reminiscent of the CUSA?
SIDE NOTE #2: I realize they are playing the patriotic angle, but selling the name/image to the C7, and then keeping the same color scheme is cheap IMO. The American is essentially what would have happened if the CUSA, BIG EAST, and ACC had a baby. Essentially the conference is a mix of the BIG EAST and the CUSA and wants to be the ACC.

I'd say people care about as much as they cared for 2003-2004 CUSA plus UConn, Temple and Navy. So.... not very much.
Plus this year, there is Louisville. Who we all hope dominates the league in football and basketball and brings a red hot program into the ACC.

The "American" is a dead conference to me. Pointless to argue over a conference that is literally dead in the water... All of those schools are stuck and no one wants to grab them. It's just a shuffle...

RE: "AAC Not Copying ACC"
I'm so glad 'Cuse moved. All the big east had to do was sign a tv contract with espn and they could have avoided a collapse. Reap what you sew conference formally known as the best. As for the question, doesn't bother me a bit. It's a secondary conference which needs no mentioning.

I think that the name American was used, because they are still considering making a nation wide conference. I think the American and the MW will eventually merge using the American name.
