Should Mid Major Football Conferences Drop Out of Division One?
I will continue to follow Toledo either way, but should conferences like the MAC, Conference USA, the Sun Belt, etc. continue with Division One Football? The new playoff system all but guarantees a mid-major will never reach a major bowl again. It also will leave only about 17 million dollars for non-bcs conferences in post season money. Would playing in the FCS, in a true playoff system, be just as if not more exciting than playing in some low tier bowl? Just a thought.

Hell no, they shouldn't drop out of Div. 1. I'm not big on government meddling, but it might be about time for an anti-trust lawsuit.

I say yes if the five were to break away from the NCAA and establish their own athletic association. I see it as a pre-emptive move because the auto-bid conferences are about to do the same. Smarter minds than mine would have to come up with a plan that would be workable, but it might involve establishing our own sports network that would compete with ESPN, Fox, etc.

FCS FB is an inferior product. I'd be done with all College FB if such a move were made. I have been a Rocket FB fan since just prior to UT's
first MAC Championship and realize how tough and the hard work it's been to get the program to its current level. It would be stupid to move backwards for the University and the community. There are only a few teams that dominate College FB, the rest of the Big 5 membership UT can compete against very well. That's the hypocrisy!

I think if the five were to drop to fcs, it would split those conferences and at least one new conference would be formed from the schools wanting to remain fbs, including UT.

RE: Should Mid Major Football Conferences Drop Out of Division One?
Perhaps what is needed is a total overhaul of college football as we know it today. Throw away conferences and implement a "promotion and relegation" system where teams are transferred between two divisions based on their performance for the completed season. "The best-ranked teams in the lower division are promoted to the division above, and the worst-ranked teams in the higher division are relegated to the division below" Put 60 teams in each division.
Based on last year;
Teams like Northern Illinois and Kent State. BG and Toledo would be in the Division I.
Teams like Iowa, Illinois, Auburn, Kansas, Colorado would be Division II
Teams would only play other teams within their own Division.
See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Promotion_and_relegation for more details.

No way...I'd rather we stay and play bowls than drop down to a lesser stage. Maybe there will be a playoff system or maybe Toledo will move up to another, more respected conference someday. Much of what I like about being a UT fan is that we are the mid major that can compete with the bigger schools from time to time. We have a good rep when it comes to this. That is part of what makes it exciting. We belong where we are and have proven it over the years.
I also agree with Boca's comment. There are only a few teams that dominate FBS each year. We have beaten several of the teams that are frequently in and out of these annual elite 10 over the years. If we have a really good year (or better yet, a few of them in a row), we could bust into the top 10 just like Boise did. Yes, perhaps the odds are against that happening, but who would have thought Boise could do it if you asked 20 years ago? Even better evidence is that NIU and Miami OH both busted onto this national stage in recent history. We belong and the MAC belongs in the FBS.
It is possible I could support a compete reorganization by a neutral NCAA committee, but I would have to see the details before I would buy in. I have a hard time seeing a conference-less landscape ever being adopted when we can't even seem to get a playoff system in place while keeping the conferences. Money, prestige, and those in high places will dominate whatever happens and this is not likely to favor us.

do you all really think the MAC is down and out? not gonna happen. college football was in the governments mouth recently about cheating and not being fair. they wont go back to the "left out in the cold" mentality that was going on when the rockets went undefeated 3 years running in the 60's and went 10-1 and sat home more recently
things will be turning around for the good again.
and then a MAC player went #1 in the draft. thats only the start. WE will find a way. just because the detroit lions are a greedy bunch of idiots who dont want the MAC in their house, doesnt mean there isnt another indoor game or outdoor bowl game somewhere that will be a haven for the rockets.
everything will be fine.

I guess I don't think Toledo should drop to FCS, but hopefully to better conference someday. Do I think the MAC is down and out? I don't know about out, but the publication I'm reading has Eastern Michigan 123rd, Central Michigan 117th, Akron 115th, Miami of Ohio 114th, UMASS 113th, Kent State 107th, Bowling Green 105th, Western Michigan 104th, and Buffalo 102nd. Given there are 125 teams, I wouldn't call that good.

Kent State finished the regular season in the BCS top 25 are ranked 107?! BG at 105? Ignorance is not an excuse.

With Dri Archer back, I would be very surprised if Kent State dropped under .500 like this publication projects. But of course almost all of these "experts" go through and rank the BCS teams first, then seem to pick mid-majors not named Boise State out of a hat to complete their "expert" rankings.
