Creepy Story Out of Cuse
http://www.cbssports.com/general/blog/ey...cker-rooms

A former Syracuse staff member was sentenced to five years' probation on Thursday for secretly videotaping more than 100 male athletes in locker rooms, the Associated Press reported.

Roger Springfield, the former sports media director at Syracuse who was fired this past December, kept video recordings on his computer of football, lacrosse and soccer players. Onondaga County prosecutors say they found more than 100 “identifiable victims” on file in his computer.

"Springfield, a 57-year-old former local sports broadcaster, pleaded guilty earlier this year to second-degree unlawful surveillance.

Assistant district attorney Jeremy Cali said that Springfield had positioned the hidden camera at waist level, and that his motivation was sexual, according to the Post-Standard in Syracuse.

Cali asked that Springfield be registered as a sex offender, but Judge Thomas Miller thought that punishment “unduly harsh,” according to the report. Miller said that Springfield's willingness to seek treatment and his previously clean record influenced his decision.

“None of this was distributed in any way,” Miller told Springfield via the Post-Standard. “Be thankful it never found its way to the Internet or today would be extremely different for you.”"

Known by who? First I heard of it and he was just sentenced so it's not like I posted some story from 2011. It's on the front of CBSsports CFB page. I check out the sports sites daily and i've never seen this story.

Oh and surprise surprise, it's not on ESPN.com.

EDIT: Just did a google search from Jan. 1st 2012 to May 1st 2013 and his name did not pop up until Jan 2013 so it isn't old news from the beginning of bball season.

Basketball season starts in mid to late November. The first story about the case appeared on December 19, 2012.

On December 6, 2012. An employee was looking through football footage to assemble a video. While doing so he stumbled across the stuff.

"On Dec. 6, another athletic department employee noticed an extended period of post-game locker-room footage – about 14 to 15 minutes - on the video from the Oct. 27 football game against South Florida in Tampa, Fla.

That employee, who Fitzpatrick did not identify, noticed the footage was “clearly inappropriate” and notified a supervisor."

It broke in about Novemberish (possibly December) 2012 and it was on ESPN then (or reasonably shortly thereafter, albeit possibly in less than full detail). That said, I doubt that ESPN is particularly enthused to cover it now, especially given their contract with the ACC, which seems to be your point.

Here's a story from mid-January:
http://www.syracuse.com/news/index.ssf/2...eos_o.html

That story was written once the investigation was well underway (notice the article is fairly detailed).

I'm guessing because he never touched anyone and college aged people are of legal age. It's creepy and illegal to secretly tape people, but it is not a sex crime. If the images were of underage people... THEN it would have been a different story and he'd have to register.

So, people in syracuse knew about it 6 months ago, but no one else did. Got it.

How do you get politically correct out of this story? Where in anything did it even hint at political correctness? Seriously, do you know what PC means?

I agree that it is not a sex crime. He did not touch anyone. Not even touchable area.

I do wonder if he sold the pictures and video to web sites. A lot of web sites hosts pictures and video of naked athletes in the locker room. Apparently a lot of women and gay men like to watch naked athletes.

RE: Creepy Story Out of Cuse
I would imagine there are creepy people like this at every school. The important thing is how the schools' administrations handle the situation. Lots of great staff at Penn State who work hard every day and had nothing to do with this criminal behavior that went on. The leaders botched it all up and ruined every ones' name. Hopefully Syracuse took the high ground and it sounds like they did.

He didn't. The judge said he was lucky he didn't put them online or the punishment would have been much worse.
