So Big 12 has the Liberty Bowl
http://collegesportsblog.dallasnews.com/...rmed.html/

Big 12 spokesman Bob Burda confirmed that the Big 12’s six-year bowl lineup will include the Allstate Sugar (New Orleans), Valero Alamo (San Antonio), Russell Athletic (Orlando, Fla.), AutoZone Liberty (Memphis, Tenn.), Buffalo Wild Wings (Tempe, Ariz.) and Meineke Car Care of Texas (Houston), as expected. Big 12 will be part of several conferences providing teams to the Heart of Dallas Bowl at Cotton Bowl Stadium on a rotating basis.

RE: So Big 12 has the Liberty Bowl
It will be interesting to see where some of these bowls end up on the calendar now that Dec. 31 and Jan. 1 are occupied by the CFP games.

The Alamo, for example, is paying more money under the new deal and will get the first non-playoff/non-CFP choice from both the Big 12 and Pac-12. That's a game for prime time on a weeknight between Jan. 1 and the title game, not a Dec. 28 game. Same for the Capital One Bowl.

Thats been known for a few days. The unanswered question is---Who will the Big-12 face in the Liberty? The Memphis paper said this weekend that the Liberty was in "serious" negotiations with the ACC, SEC, AAC, and CUSA. The ball appears to be in the Liberty Bowls court as the ACC has said they will take 3 more bowls from among the Liberty, Detroit, Indy, and Military.

If the Big 12 is in the Liberty the ACC or SEC will pick them just for a P5 opponent

What can Detroit possibly offer the ACC?

The Big-10 is the opponent in the new Detroit Lions Bowl. The nightmare senario that must keep Aresco up at night is if the ACC goes with the Liberty, Detroit, and Indy Bowls. That would leave the American with just a single permanant bowl tie against a power conference for the six year period between 2014 and 2020 (and that one tie would be against a #10 SEC team). That would suck something fierce.

RE: So Big 12 has the Liberty Bowl
I thought the Liberty Bowl tended to favor whatever conference Memphis is in. If the ACC has a real chance to add that bowl against the Big XII it would a very good pick up considering the other options for that slot.

Clearly that's not automatic or it would have happened already. The AAC may get the bowl, but it's clear the Liberty is at the very least intrigued with the concept of a P5 vs P5 match-up. Memphis fans do a good job of supporting the conference in the bowl (even when the Tigers are not on the field). Perhaps that pays off for the AAC.

To be honest, I'd be really surprised if it's not an SEC team.

I am all for trading out the Pinstripe for the Liberty. Pinstripe is a horrible geographic fit for our league and Liberty is better without being too bad on WVU.

If it is the Big 12 #4 (5 with a playoff team) it is a pretty attractive bowl with its history, destination, and drivable location (and presumably good date). I would think SEC or AAC most likely. AAC would have to be it's #1 team (#2 if they are in the playoff or BCS).

A Big Ten opponent with a decent payout for the worst ACC bowl eligible team, which is still perceived to be better than playing, say, a Gang of Five team in a lower tier bowl.

If the Big-12 #4 is in the Liberty I would think the AAC would be more that happy to commit thier #1 (after any BCS/playoff selections) to the Liberty. Given the developing bowl landscape, the AAC would have hit a home run if they can land such an arrangement.

That would absolutely be a home run, which is why I expect it won't happen. Aresco hasn't even managed to hit a single in his time as commissioner. What's sad is the fact that we are even discussing that keeping the Liberty, with Memphis in the league, would be a home run.

Agreed, I would think the american would be all over the liberty with its top pick to play the big 12. Also, could see the sec want a different league in their alabama bowl, so the american would be out a spot.

I'll be surprised if the SEC keeps its Birmingham bowl tie-in, unless there are truly no more worthy options (or if the Liberty decides to go with a non-SEC team).

The american should go all in for memphis:

http://www.cbssports.com/collegebasketba...fedexforum

step 2 get the liberty bowl with team 1. That would ko the liberty/sec deal but getting team 4 from the big 12 and team 1 from the american is a good setup. I doubt the sec drops the alabama bowl considering its in the HQ town. I'd guess they would try to prop it up, ditto the big 10 in detroit bowl, + the sec has lost bowls, peach, cotton, maybe liberty so they need to fill slots.

I do think the Big-12 #4 vs the AAC #1 would probably be a very entertaining, competetive, and well attended game. The Liberty could do worse.
