Ummm... some people actually do wake up and decide to be gay. I've known many a lesbian that were straight at one time (even had kids) and then decided to bat for the other team. Just sayin 07-coffee3

My first roommate was gay for jfc. This isn't gay bashing and when the Teo thing hit, it was all over the airwaves about "if he came out" and how it would be perceived.

So go attack the media, or the locker room....hate to let ya in on the secret....he's a kicker....he was gonna catch shite anyway.

I would say that in those instances it was less of a choice to suddenly become a lesbian than they finally decided to stop hiding who they really were. I think it's much more common for gay people to repress their feelings and attempt to have "normal" relationships than it is for someone to suddenly decide that they want to be gay.

Oh yeah? At what point did you choose to like girls then? Since it's a decision and all.

Lol so we should join in on making fun of someone who is gay because its funny that they are gay? Yeah!!!! Woooooo! You had a gay roommate?! So let the jokes fly Richard Pryor!

I have a great sense of humor but making fun of others who struggle daily based on their sexual orientation, race, religion, physical or mental disability is beneath me and I will speak out against whether the kid comes from MTSU, Southern Miss, ODU, the SBC, the AAC, the SEC, ect. If you have to be funny at the expense of others then you aren't funny. It's that simple. And blame all of our mothers for the US being soft. After all its them who ultimately taught us "if you can't say something nice, then don't say anything at all."

i have a buddy of mine who says he knew from an early age he was gay. Another friend of mine got hurt by 2 disasterous marriges & from there didnt want anything to do with women again & decided to become gay. i even have a lesbian friend that admits she is gay b/c she was raped @ age 11 & from there wanted nothing to do witj men.

I have to agree that for some its hardwired & some its a choice based on ppl i know.

all in all it dosent matter what this guys sexual preference is. What matters is is he a talented enough kicker to play in the nfl.

Where is it stated anywhere the guy can't kick?

Where do you people come up with these fabricated arguments?

Honestly, do you read something and decide to come with statements that are irrelevant to anything? "Hey honey how was your day??" "Well, I wiped my arse and then realized that it circles the sun and the porcelain as well."

Just golly whiz.....

Him being gay is irrelevant to his ability. Regardless, it is going to be an issue because this board, the media, and everyone else is going to make it that.

....here comes the smack board

Several years ago, a UAB kicker missed 5 field goals in regulation in a game the Blazers lost in the second OT against Tennessee.

Gay, straight, or undecided, if he'd hit just one I'd have been a happy man.

Are you breathing? Are you fat? Are you bald? Are you clumsy? Are you tongue tied (okay don't answer that).

It's life. From a supermodel to those that are viewed 'differently', they are all chastised at some point. From the jock to the nerd.....same damn thing. It's just life.

If the pic would've been a guy and girl, the comments would be equally as funny. Then the gay community would be offended.

It amazes me the perception is somehow assumed that will magically change.....Where everyone is pc and nice and there isn't violence and blahbittyblahbittyblahbittyblah.

...oops, forgot about the thin skinned

In the end ( no pun intended) this is what matters most. What the player does on the field.

He just said Gendreau produced on the field and that should really be the only thing that mattered.

RE: NFL first open gay player - FG kicker from MTSU???
Being gay is not a choice. Tens of thousands of homosexuals have committed suicide because they couldn't deal with society's view of their orientation. Choosing to accept it as who you are and acting upon it is a choice.

Regardless, I'm a southern male of European decent, raised as a Christian, and who is conservative politically and a registered Republican so I'm of course....a bigot [sarcasm]........but counter to popular perception, I don't care what one does behind closed doors as long as they're not harming someone else.

What's important here is that a young man from MT is good enough to play in the NFL. Who he loves and and how he loves is not important and should be no one else's concern. There are probably dozens of gay NFL players. As soon as society realizes that being gay is a non-issue, we can move on to more important things. Coming out as an active NFL player is one step in the right direction.....in my opinion.

If you come out in public, usually it is done to start a conversation on the topic of gays and hopefully increase awareness. Discussions will include pro and cons.

Produced on the field = the guy can kick = nobody said he couldn't = nothing to do with being the first openly gay NFL player

Clear enough?

RE: NFL first open gay player - FG kicker from MTSU???
Of all the gay people that I know, and I know a ton, I have never met one who "chose" to be gay. Who would make the conscious decision to be hated on because of who they love? Sexuality is on a continuum of people exclusively straight and people exclusively gay and all of those that fall in between.

I hypothesize that the reason there are so many women that are comfortable enough to play the fence is because our male-dominated society has a double standard in regards to lesbians and gay men.

Lesbians are more often portrayed as women who are sexually adventurous rather than a women who prefer other women to men. In that regard they are more accepted on the surface, but at the core are not taken as seriously when proclaiming their love for the same sex. While the same male-dominated society views gay men as an affront to traditional male qualities and charateristics and therefore find any dalliances between two men as repulsive.

So in essence women in the middle of the Kinsey scale are more free to act on their desires towards the same sex than men in the same predicament who fear more scrutiny.

Religion and cultural backgrounds are factors which also play a huge role in a LGBT person's decision to act on their feelings and come out as well.

NFL’s first openly gay player could be Middle Tennessee State kicker Alan Gendreau

I would be proud of him if he were from my school. Gay people shouldn't have to hide their sexual orientation anymore than anybody else and if someone doesn't like their sexuality then tough. I grew up when a white man couldn't survive if he wanted to marry a black girl or a white girl wanted to marry a black man, and if you dated a black girl as a friend of mine did back in the day, you would be treated like you had committed some horrible crime.

I don't care if someone is homosexual, hetrosexual or asexual, as long as they are good citizens I will support their decision. I served in 2 branches of this nations military and never see a day free of pain from my injuries occurred from it, so I see no reason anyone's rights should be taken away just because of who they love. The sick ones is the one that thinks it should be and those people are the ones that makes a mockery of my sacrifice to this country.
