Here's Pernetii's Letter of Resignation
Quote:As you know, my first instincts when I saw the videotape of Coach Rice's behavior was to fire him immediately. However, Rutgers decided to follow a process involving university lawyers, human resources professionals, and outside counsel. Following review of the independent investigative report, the consensus was that university policy would not justify dismissal. I have admitted my role in, and regret for, that decision, and wish that I had the opportunity to go back and override it for the sake of everyone involved.
I'm sorry, but I just don't buy the "I couldn't fire him" line. What has changed legally between December and now that Rice could be fired now, but not then?
I have to say...his gut instinct was to fire him and "university policy would not justify dismissal" is alarming on both accounts. Just about everyone thought Rice should be fired. I find it hard to believe that university policy was anywhere near as relaxed as to allow that type of behavior. It is usually zero tolerance EVERYWHERE. Pernetti said it was Rice's first offense but went on to say he was disturbed by Rice's "pattern of behavior." Those two statements are contradictory and indicate at least a small amount of cover up. Even if Pernetti wanted to fire Rice and didn't, he made the wrong decision. That is one he ultimately has to pay for with his own job. It is no different in his world than it is in corporate America.

Nothing did. Tim Pernetti is making sure that if he goes down, others with more authority than him do as well. He's trying to pull Rutgers' university lawyers, HR Dept., and dear Prez. Barchi under the bus where he himself was thrown.
Good for him, although I suspect it will be some of legal and not Barchi who go down on this one.

The fact that as an AD of a great University like Rutgers is that You could sit through those videos and Not feel the humility those kids were going through shows that Tim probably thought it was funny like the coaches seemed to do.
I'm 60 and had that been one of My kids or Grandkids, I would have gone off big time. I hope now with the videos out there those kids don't suffer peer abuse for not fighting back but They had and have a lot on the line. I pray that They can get a brake with new coach at Rutgers or elsewhere.

How long before the President follows him out the door? The next question is whether or not any board members join him in the mass exodus...

Sounds like the witch hunt is done. Christie has decided to publicly back Barchi at this point. Christie will now start to throw political weight around to quiet things down.

Not that you care, but I hope you understand that my position on this is not reflective of the University in general. I do like Rutgers.

If things quiet down. From the way it sounds like everything went down, there seems to be plenty of blame to go around for all those in charge at Rutgers. Anyone throwing their political weight at this point in time just might be committing political suicide. It just depends if enough people care enough to look into the matter, or whether they'd rather act like sheep willing to be led to their slaughter....

Can't blame Pernetti for thinking that he shouldn't be the only one thrown under the bus, but his own lapse of judgment was pretty bad.
I agree, but if there's any truth to his portrayal of RU's system in how he couldn't fire Rice, Pernetti's final payment from Rutgers may be its most generous.
"I wanted to fire him, but Rutgers said I couldn't?" Easily an eight-digit settlement figure if he goes that route.

RE: Tim Pernetti out as Rutgers AD
So, Pernetti's first instinct was to fire Rice. That is the only thing he got right. His first actions were to cover his own ass by bringing in the university lawyers, pass the buck o the human resources department, and them cover his ass some more with outside lawyers. My first action after seeing that tape would have been to call the police.

Ironic that this same institution rallied to the support of its women basketball players in the face of the Don Imus slurs. And rightly so. Yet this same institution failed at every level to protect the interests of its male basketball players. This is the same institution that lost one of its students to suicide by jumping off a bridge because he couldn't tolerate the homophobic slurs he faced on campus. Short memories among the administration. They had a real opportunity to make a positive statement in support of gay students by standing up against the kind of behavior that Rice exhibited. Instead they completely dropped the ball big time.

I went to school there. Its actually one of the more LGBTQ friendly places in the country. The kid jumped off the bridge because his roommate was a homophobe and a hi-tech peeping tom who exposed his not yet open sexuality to the world. Very different than the homosexual slurs picture you paint.

The president should go too. No doubt about it !!!! It's a pretty easy call. "what, our basketball players are being slapped around, hit with balls and pushed during practices" Is there any doubt how one should react to that? Everyone involved made huge mistakes. I can't help but wonder if the institution, knowing it had a chance for an invite from BIG, continued so as not have the invite or possibility of the invite being removed. Don't you wonder??? I do.

Most everyone in this thread IS sticking up for your school. We're just not interested in protecting the people who abused young people or the people who facilitated said abuse.
This is NOT a Rutgers University issue, it's a Mike Rice, Jimmy Martelli and Tim Pernetti issue.
As for Martelli, the smallest fish in all of this, as I have warned you all repeatedly, never trust a grown man who goes with a child's nickname. It held true in the case of Bobby Petrino and it is true of Jimmy Martelli as well. As a rule, I do not trust men who do that.

And I've stuck up for Pernetti who I do believe acted in good faith. Ultimately it was impossible to move on with him I'll concede that. And I've continuously voiced my disapproval with Martelli and Rice and have agreed they should have been fired back in December when the school initially acted (publicly mind you) on this.

I may be cynical but IMO people will be more accepting of Auburns allwdged cheating because they have a winning program. What happened at Rutgers is wrong what is claimed to have happened at auburn is criminal IMO the AD, coach , his staff and the president should ALL be terminated

This still gave them an opportunity to stand up against the sort of anti-gay verbiage that Rice spewed out. Every time an institution does that, they make gay kids feel a little safer. The kid jumping off the bridge simply showed how vulnerable a kid can feel regardless of how gay friendly you paint the campus to be.
