Actually, that game was in Hattiesburg. I think we were down by 8 runs after the 2nd or 3rd inning, and ended up winning by 5 or 6 runs.

I agree we didn't quit, but what was frustrating is that against soft-tossing Napoli, we failed to make the adjustments after the first or 2nd time through the order. Instead, we continued to swing early in the count, and (though I did not watch the game on OwlVision), given the number of pulled ground balls, it appeared our right-handed hitters were trying to pull everything rather than waiting back and going the opposite way.

I really didn't care for the home plate ump today. He made me wish Oros was behind the plate calling balls and strikes. It seemed like Simms didn't have much working today, but Blue totally squeezed John. For the record, I didn't think the first base ump had his best game either. Both umpires seemed to sleepwalk through the game.

Our section had been commenting that we could have lived with the blow out and driven home thinking, "it was just one of those games." When the incomplete comeback was finished, we all were pissed that a guy poorly going through the motions would end up costing Rice the game. It is unusual for me to go half a season before I leave a ballpark thinking that the umpiring crew was totally incompetent, but this was the first time this season that the crew seemed to be not worthy of calling a whiffle ball game.

Probably explains the quick hook. Coach must have been aware he wasn't 100%. I've never seen Coach pull a starter that fast (if only because no reliever would have been ready?).

Agree on the cut of Cook's throw to the plate. No way it would have gotten the runner. It was probably 10 ft up the 1b line.

That explains it. Even when pinched previously, Big John has always been a strike thrower, and rarely issues more than 2 - 3 free passes an entire game.

obviously we have had lots of great comebacks. I was recalling this game at Reckling when we trailed 12-2 going to B3 and won by 7 runs

Out of curiousity, did the home plate ump throw someone in the dugout out in the bottom of the 8th? I know Coach came out and had a very long discussion with him after the inning ended, so he didn't get run.

IIRC, the ump came over and barked at the dugout after the foul ball call on the Rice line drive that hit off the first baseman's glove in what most of the crowd thought was fair territory but was deflected into foul ground.

I believe he yelled out (in frustration), " You have been warned!" So, we didn't see anyone tossed.

I rather enjoyed the Rice bench getting into the game. They were pretty vocal and at one point the Home Plate Ump warned them to knock it off.
