Let it just be "The East"

It we are going with America in the name make it Big America that way it shows ties to the Big East. Atlantic Gulf Conference would be my pick though

I kind of balked at it at first, but now I kind of like it. It has a good roll off the tongue quality (esp. as A-12) and is a respectable name. I like it.

BTW - Both America 12 and A-12 are available according to the US Trademark office.

I haven't complained once about any of this, but this is absolutely terrible. I hope to God it's not true.

Just because someone hasn't registered the A-12 name doesn't mean that they'll get it.

Quick! Someone get on there and reserve them so they can't be used! Then offer to sell them the name for $5million. I'll take 10% for the idea...

Another horrible decision.

Not crazy about it, but A-12 rolls off the toungue easily and is catchy.

If were gonna be America 12 then, we should invite Brazil State or Peru Tech to join. They're in America. Damn, we'd have an awesome football (soccer) conference.

Why do we want to clone CUSA? Is it that good of a name? Really?

Big America and America-12 are both so similar to CUSA that the instant comparison will be made. There is no way to tie the geographic, physical, or cultural characteristics of this group in a single name because there is no similarity. Its a group thrown together due to necessity and happenstance. The only thing the group actually has in common is that we are all universities that seem to lie right near the borderline that divides AQ schools from non-AQ schools. We are the challengers, the next up, the party crashers, the left overs, the most likely next overnight successs---but that's not much of a basis for a new name.

So, knowing that, stop expecting the name to be a perfect thumbnail description that applies 100% accurately to every member. It doesn't happen with most geographically compact conferences (mainly because most are no longer all that compact since moving in size from 8 to 12 or even 14 members) so its certainly not going to be the case here. What the name should do is give you a thumbnail sketch of the general identity of the conference. But that doesn't mean there won't be an outlier or an exception to that general identity within the group. Think of the name as a caricature drawing where the dominant features are over emphasized---it's easily recognized, but not really a perfectly accurate rendering. That's what a conference name essentially should do.

I'm really hoping that isn't the final choice. The name screams "hodge-podge", and I think is too close in identity to Conference USA. I'm just waiting for them to create Red, White, and Blue divisions.

The media already likes the Big Metro!!!

It would be nice to see this retarded league make at least one good decision in 2013

But see that's the issue. These schools don't really have a common identity. We have large public urban schools, large public rural schools, private schools, and a military academy. There really isn't much in common other than that they're in America and they're (soon to be, allegedly) 12 in number. They're too spread out to really be called any one region, so I think it works. Plus it's a lot harder to make fun of the name.

Okay you don't want America in the name you don't want to tie it to Geography such as Atlantic or Gulf or eastern then what do you wanna call it? Do you wanna sell the naming rights to a company? That's fine by me
