We were a bit more than consistent! He was #1 until Buffalo hired the Ole Miss guy last year.
Very surprised that the Toledo AD made 80k less than Compher.

I hope the next AD gets some incentives in his contract for increases in season ticket holders and single game attendance average for FB and M/W BB.

Before we get too excited about the next AD, we better hope the new President sees the value in spending on athletics. That has me most nervous. I don't want to think about it but everything we have built the last decade could be gone in an instant if we end up with someone that doesn't value athletics like Peter running the show.

I would certainly hope that the search committee and Board understand what the football team success has done and can do for enrollment. In addition, athletics brings in a lot of donor dollars with the potential for more. De-value athletics and your revenue will drop considerably. We are not Northwestern or University of Chicago, which can attract donor dollars purely on academics.

Interesting that the AD immediately above Compher on the list is Groth.

Mike O'Brien has been at UT a long time as well. I am surprised that Compher made that much because his relationship base proved too weak to make good scheduling at NIU for football. Outside of the outstanding results in football and recent facilties for football, the entire body of work for athletics at NIU under Compher was average at best, many sports below average. He was overpaid in my opinion.

NIU Athletics HAS to be more than football. NIU cannot continue to wallow in MAC mediocracy any longer - outside of football and a few here and there athletic successes, NIU has been middling in the MAC, even their best years.
Compher rode the Orange Wave out of town at the apex of his accomplishments, and the new AD actually has pretty big challenges ahead -

Perhaps with a new AD, some of those other teams will be more successful. New blood is definitely needed at the helm.

Strong sports programs especially football and basketball are the best marketing tool available so it would be stupid for the next pres to discount their importance.

From a BIG Sportsfan and Alum.
NIU's problems are MUCH deeper than Athletics and an AD. Take a step up above 5,000 feet (AD's pervue). MANY new leaders in Executive positions. Can you say "housecleannig".
Where are the invisible Trustee's in all of this? Where is their leadership? To what extent are they involving city of DeKalb leadership in their new Pres selection process?
I'm beginning to wonder if Compher was just reading the tea leaves. Granted, there is A LOT of speculation in this post but, nearly all of the "new" players are fact...

I don't think he tried to make good scheduling for football. Wasn't part of the philosophy (for home games that is)

DeKalb 57 is right. NIU faces a terrible economy in a state that is on the verge of bankrupcy and that is losing residents by the boatload. The whole university needs an infusion of money and needs to focus on increasing enrollment dramatically, both in state and out of state. Athletics, at least football, is carrying its load, but everything needs money and positive publicity.
