Monken not messing around...kicks two players off team

Coach Todd Monken quickly is making it quite apparent what the individual standards he will require of those intending to play football for him at Southern Miss.

Responsibility.

Accountability.

Hard work.

Those who choose not to meet those standards will face consequences.

Monken dismissed defensive lineman Dalvin Craft and tight end Stanley Tart from the team last week for repeated violations of various team rules.

“I cleaned out their lockers, and they didn’t seem too interested in trying to come back, so both of them are no longer on scholarship and no longer in school,” Monken said. “We tried everything in our power to explain to them what we expected, and at the end of the day, you couldn’t count on them.

“That’s not acceptable.”

Craft, a 6-foot-3, 300-pound tackle from Atmore, Ala., appeared in seven games as a true freshman this past fall, finishing with five tackles.

Tart, a 6-4, 265-pound native of Pensacola, Fla., was red-shirted last season.

Monken said the duo’s list of infractions was varied, including missing or being late to classes, study halls and off-season workout sessions.

“When the other guys are doing what they are supposed to be doing, and then you have a few who football just doesn’t seem that important to, who school doesn’t seem that important to, who aren’t willing to work hard, we’re just not going to do it,” Monken said. “There are things that we are going to ask you to do as members of this team, on the field, off the field, and those things just didn’t seem important to them.

“So, they are no longer with us.”

USM’s spring practice is scheduled to start on March 19.

He cleaned out their lockers himself? Sounds like a real hands-on type of guy. A lot of HCs don't even go into the locker room much.

I caught that too...liking him more and more...hell, EJ didn't know their name if the roster listing was staring him in the face.

EJ's still wondering why Arsenio Alford didn't work out at QB right now.

Yeah, like - Why did we (Southern Miss) clean out his desk when he had us playing the right way.

This is what happens when there is a new sheriff in town. Last year we had 6 original seniors left in Snyders last class. For various reasons Holliday either dismissed them or they quietly transfered because they either didn't fit his system or wasn't DI quality in his eyes. That was out of a class of 21 in the class of 2008.

As much as it hurts to lose two players, I think this is becoming a trend in college football. Several coaches dismiss players because they don't follow the rules. Nobody wants to end up like Tressel. Besides you kick two trouble makers off the team and it sends the message that not only does he want quality players, but quality people as well.

I like the fact he said they were late for classes are part of the reason. I remember Bower really pushed that aspect and glad to see Monken is doing the same.

When I was at USM in the early 90's a teacher of mine said he had issues with a few players & notified Coach Hallman. Hallman was waiting in class for them the next time they met...... He never had an issue from them again.

No wonder he didn't work out at LSU.

Thats exactly why i knew he would never work out down there.

This new s&c guy isnt playing either. A couple weeks ago a kid made the mistake of walking back to the locker room instead of running. He got 200 flights on the stairmaster.

Curley Hallman was an even tougher assistant coach at Memphis State in '78. His running backs quickly learned that he was no nonsense, hard-nosed ex-DB from Texas A&M. I think he retired as AD at a high school near Florence, AL
