Pope throws in the towel
Pope steps down. Light up the fire place, get the Cardinals some flights to Rome. Probably figured out what a lot of us have. The morons are running the planet, and common sense and good judgement don't hold water water with this self-centered gimmy gimmy generation.

RE: Pope throws in the towel
Or maybe he got tired of covering up the sexual abuse by his employees. He knew about what was going on since 1982, That's a long time to carry on as a hypocrite.
Or it could be that the number of Catholics since he started driving the Popemobile has dropped considerably. All in all, he was a failed leader.
Most Americans couldn't care less about what the Pope says anyway.

RE: Pope throws in the towel
God contacted me this morning. Told me I am a prime candidate to become the next Pope. I will be traveling to the Vatican within the next couple weeks.

Some Pope's have had influence. We've always had our Akmadenajas, Putins, Kim Jongs, etc., but they seems to be more excepted today as world leaders are simply too worried about taking care of their constituents cradle to grave rather than viewing the big picture.
History will repeat itself, it always does. One of these nuts will nuke someone, we'll choose up sides and WWIII will start. But before that happens this isolationist mentality will have turned us all into a bunch of Neville Chaimberlins, turning a blind eye to what is actually materializing.
The Pope is the one guy who can garner some attention on the evil in the world, but unfortunately people have stopped listening.

RE: Pope throws in the towel
Well, when the Pope says dumb things, like condoms will only increase the AIDS epidemic in Africa, lifted the excommunication of a Bishop who said the Holocaust never happened, refused to accept any responsibility for the abuse of thousands of children even though his primary responsibility before Popeing was to deal with abuse cases, and other hard to beleve actions and comments, he loses the right to have people listen to him. Wearing a funny hat doesn't make up for the rest of the act.

Maybe not.
But people in this country and around the world seem to care about the position.
Based upon the size of the crowds that the pope (any pope) draws, and the "respect" given to him by heads of state, I'd say that people probably care about this one position more than any other position in the world.
Disagree?

I suspect that at least 1.2 billion Catholics probably care.

Needless to say, they have mental health issues.

RE: Pope throws in the towel
This is the first time since the 1400's that a Pople has resigned. Remarkable.

RE: Pope throws in the towel
Well he is 86 and in poor health. Probably his number one reason for calling it quits. But a lot of these guys have been propped up in a chair and paraded around as figureheads until their bodies assumed room temp.
Note to Charm: When you lump 1.2 billion people into a monolithic group of like minded fools you make yourself look like a bigger a$$ than you already are (not an easy task mind you). Trust me, if Catholics were all like minded we'd have 400 million people in the country and Catholics would still be having a dozen kids per family.

CLARIFICATION: The minority of 1.2 million Catholics who are bent out of shape over the Pope resigning have mental issues.
Better?

Why do you say that they have mental issues?
